It was a rough weekend for the
East Jackson Lady Eagles, as
they suffered back-to-back losses
to Rabun County and Stephens
County Friday and Saturday.
The weekend began with the
team’s first region game of the
season, a Friday night match-up
with the Lady Cats of Rabun
County. The Lady Eagles found
themselves in a hole early, going
down 16-5 in the first quarter.
They fought back a little in the
second quarter, and were down
26-19 going into the half in what
had been an aggressively fought
game.
East Jackson came out just as
aggressively in the third quarter,
and cut the lead down to four
points going into the fourth, 37-33.
Late in the fourth quarter, the
Lady Eagles tied the game, and
went ahead briefly, but a surge by
the Lady Wildcats put them back
on top by the end, 49-47.
Dynelle Todman led the scoring
with 12 points. Autumn Wilbanks
had 11, Marley Pullian scored 10
and Emma Turner finished with
seven.
Turner also scored 13 rebounds,
while Todman had six. Terin
Gillespie had five steals, while
Pullian had three. Turner blocked
six shots, with Gillespie recording
three blocks.
The Lady Eagles’ next game
was a Saturday rematch with
Stephens County, which beat East
Jackson Dec. 8. The results were
the same the second time around,
as the Lady Indians handed East
Jackson their second loss of the
new year, 72-34.
Stephens County pulled out to
a 16-9 lead at the end of the
first quarter. The deficit grew tre
mendously in the second quarter,
with the Lady Indians leading
41-26 at the half. Things didn’t
get any better for East Jackson
in the third quarter, as the Lady
Eagles scored only two points
to Stephens County’s 15 going
into the fourth quarter, and would
pick up only six more points
before the final buzzer.
Dane Gaillard led East
Jackson’s offense with 11 points,
while Todman picked up seven.
Gaillard also led in rebounds with
11. Turner had four steals on the
night and blocked four shots.
“We are playing careless basket
ball right now,’’ said coach Amy
Larimer. “We have to begin taking
care of the ball and giving our
selves a chance to win ball games.
We have plenty of opportunities
throughout our games that if we
capitalize on can change the flow
of the game. We have to get to the
point where we take advantage of
those opportunities.’’
East Jackson will travel to
Dawson County this Friday for a
7 p.m. game. They will face Banks
County in Homer Tuesday, Jan.
15.
Eagles Have Rough Weekend, Drop 2
By Brandon Reed
It wasn’t the weekend the East
Jackson Eagles had hoped for,
as they came out on the short
end Friday night against Rabun
County, and again Saturday
against Stephens County.
East Jackson played its first
ever Region 8AA game against
the Wildcats Friday evening, with
Rabun County coming away with
the 76-74 victory.
The game was close all night,
with Rabun leading at the half
34-31. The Eagles returned to
the court for the second and
built up a 12-point lead halfway
through the fourth quarter. But the
Wildcats scrambled back, and in
the end took the win by a scant
two points.
Kolby Gilbert led East Jackson
in scoring Friday night with 19
points, while Brandon Garrett
had 11 and Zak Gilbert contrib
uted 10.
Coach Brian Turner said he and
his team knew the pressure was
coming from Rabun County.
“We just didn’t do a very good
job of handling the ball against
their pressure,’’ he said. “Give
them a lot of credit, they hit
some clutch shots down at the
end, and we didn’t do what we
needed to do to protect the lead
that we had. We had a couple of
opportunities late in the game to
win or tie it up, and we just didn’t
get the job done. You have to give

Rabun County a lot of credit for
battling back, and I think that’s
a lot of what you’re going to see
from all the games in our side of
the subregion. I think they’ll all be
closely contested.”
East Jackson next hosted
Stephens County in a night that
could best be described as rough,
ending with a 94-72 loss.
The Eagles scored 23 points in
the first quarter, and were mov
ing the ball well, but gave up
22 points defensively. Stephens
County then came out after the
half, outscored East Jackson 31-8
in the third quarter and put the
game to bed in the fourth quarter
for the win.
Garrett led East Jackson with 20
points, Brandon Rucker scored 15
and Kolby Gilbert scored 14.
“I thought we kept battling hard,’’
Turner said. “Stephens County
came in, and they basically played
lights out. They didn’t miss many
shots, and their defense got bet
ter. We really didn’t answer the
bell after the first quarter.’’
Up next for East Jackson is
another region contest, this time
against the Tigers of Dawson
County, who come into the game
with an 0-1 region record, and 9-5
overall mark.
Turner said he expects the
Wildcats to be very similar to the
Eagles on defense.
“They try to play a lot of man
pressure, and they will fall back
into zone against us,’’ he said.
“Most of the teams we’ve played
shoot the ball extremely well from
the outside. We’re really going
to have to defend the outside,
and hopefully let our size inside
kind of control the paint where
we don’t have to double down in
the paint, and basically guard the
threes. That’s really what we’re
going to have to do all season.
“From everything I hear, every
body in our region shoots the ball
extremely well. That’s not one of
our strengths. We’re really going
to have to defend them well on
the perimeter Friday night.’’
The Eagles will travel to Dawson
County Friday night, with tip-off
set for 8:30.
