BJC Auxiliary Donates Exercise Equipment
The BJC Medical Center Auxiliary recently
donated three new pieces of exercise equip
ment to the BJC Wellness Center, located on
Hospital Road, Commerce. Jerry Archer, center,
and Edna Hix, right, the auxiliary’s treasurer and
president respectively, are pictured with center
director Tom Durham and one of the new exer
cise machines. The auxiliary donated a $2,000
check to Durham for the purchase of a recum
bent bike (pictured), an incline bench press and
a lower abdominal stand. The auxiliary operates
the gift shop at the hospital and hosts a range
of fund-raising events and activities.
Girl Scout Cookie Sale Under Way
Girl Scout cookies are on sale,
will be sold door-to-door through
January and then will be avail
able for purchase at booth sales
around the area.
This year, the Girl Scouts have
announced two new cookie fla
vors — the Lemon Creme Chalet
and a chocolate chip cookie
that is sugar free. In addition,
girls will also be selling Samoas,
Trefoils, Tagalongs, Thin Mints,
All-Abouts and Do-Si-Dos.
Cookies are $3.50 a box and a
portion of the sales benefit local
troops.
The Girl Scout Cookie
Program — an integral part of
Girl Scouting’s Business and
Economic Literacy initiative
for girls ages 6-17 — provides
finance, marketing, and public
speaking skills, along with expe
riences that build girls’ self-con
fidence and help them develop
their own personal leadership
style, according to the organiza
tion.
Through the Girl Scout Cookie
Program, girls manage invento
ry, set goals, learn money man
agement and develop marketing
skills. Essentially, the girls run
their own business. The entire
troop sets a goal and follows a
plan leading toward that goal.
Girl Scout troops use funds
from the cookie activity to fund
a service project or to plan for
a trip.

Yoga Classes Start Tuesday
At Commerce Public Library
The Commerce Public Library
opens a new door next Tuesday
evening at 6:00 with the com
mencement of a five-week series
of Yoga classes. Taught by certified
Yoga instructor Shannon Franks,
who is adult wellness coordinator
at the Athens YMCA, the series
begins with a free introductory
class, which can be taken from 6
to 7 p.m. or from 7 to 8 p.m. (So
many people signed up that a
second session had to be added.)
“The 6 o’clock class is pretty well
filled-up,” says library staffer Lisa
Crumley, who arranged for the
Yoga classes to take place, “but
we still have some room in the 7
o’clock class.’’
Crumley notes that participants
who wish to continue in the series
will need to pay a $40 instruction
fee at the end of the introductory
class to reserve a place in the fol
lowing four classes.
“We’ve had a really enthusiastic
response to the whole idea of
Yoga classes,’’ Crumley adds. “It’s
wonderful for fitness, flexibility,
and stress management, and just
for general well-being, and I guess
the word is out. People know
about it. So we’re eager to get
started.”
To sign up for the introductory
class, please stop by the library or
call 706-335-5946.
Library Hosts
County Board Meeting
Commerce’s library was the
host library for the quarterly
meeting of the Jackson County
Board of Library Trustees last
Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. On
the agenda was an anticipated
increase in the fees for member
ship in the Piedmont Regional
System. The regional system pro
vides its member libraries with
Internet connections via T-l lines;
PINES catalog, circulation, and
resource sharing; cataloging of
all circulating materials; courier
service to move books around the
region and the state; outreach ser
vices which take books to nursing
homes and assisted-living facili
ties; and more. The fee for these
services could more than double
when a new regional budget takes
effect July 1.
Jackson County’s seven librar
ies had hoped to cover such an
increase through greater support
from the county itself, but when
Jackson County’s new budget
took effect Jan. 1, support for
libraries was at the same level it
had been for four years — although
the county has promised to help
two of its libraries expand, using
SPLOST funding.
Investment Club
Calls It Quits
Just one month shy of its
eighth anniversary, the library’s
Investment Club quietly disband
ed in late December, said club
president Bettie Harden.
Started Feb. 10, 2000, the
Investment Club found itself
greeted by a major decline in
stock prices as the “cyber-bub
ble’’ burst. “We decided it was an
opportunity to buy stocks at bar
gain prices,’’ Harden says, “and to
learn all about the market, which
we did.’’
Advised first by Napier Minor
of Smith Barney in Athens and
then by Mark McCannon of
Edward Jones in Commerce, the
club also had guest speakers and
heard reports from members. “We
had a great run and a great time,’’
says Harden.
