Greene Marry In Athens
Blake Kellum of Commerce
and Lyndsy Greene of Ottumwa,
Iowa, were united in marriage
Friday, Jan. 25, 2008, at 2 p.m., at
the Athens-Clarke County Court
house.
The groom’s parents, Ralph and
Bethe Kellum, attended the cere
mony, along with other family and
friends of the couple.
The couple will reside in Brasel-
ton.

EJCHS Student Wins
Legion Oratorial Contest
East Jackson Comprehensive
High School junior Andrew J. Van
Deventer was named the winner
of the American Legion spon
sored high school oratorical con
test. Van Deventer’s delivery of an
8-10 minute prepared speech and a
subsequent 3-5 minute discussion
of an assigned topic was judged
to be the best oratorical presenta
tion during a competition recently
held at Commerce Post 93.
The local competition is the
first step in the annual American
Legion’s National High School
Oratorical Scholarship Program in
which students compete for cash
prizes and scholarships worth
thousands of dollars.
For his efforts Van Deventer was
awarded $150. His presentation on
a prepared subject concerning the
U.S. Constitution was followed by
an assigned topic in which he was
given only five minutes of prepa
ration time. The assigned topic
was Article 2 Section 4 which
addressed the impeachment pro
cess.
Van Deventer will go on to the
Legion’s 10th District competi
tion scheduled for Feb. 8 in Lo-
ganville. Should he win the dis
trict competition, he will go on
to compete in the Legion’s Area
III contest where cash prizes will
be $350 for first place, $250 for
second place and $175 for third.
The state competition will be held
in March where area winners will
compete for prizes of $1,300,
$900 and $450. In addition to the
awards by winners of the various
elimination rounds of the compe
tition, university scholarships of
$18,000, $16,000 and $14,000 will
be awarded to the first through
third places in the national finals.
Each state winner who competes
in the first round of the national
contest will receive a $ 1,500 schol
arship. Participants in the second
round who do not advance to the
national final round will receive
an additional $1,500.
The top three youth orators who
have won all previous elimination
rounds of the contest will vie for
top honors in the national contest
April 4-6 at the IUPUI Conference
Center and Hotel, Indianapolis,
IN. The American Legion will pay
the expenses of state winners at
the national contest.

Kick-Off Held For
2008 Relay For Life

And Brent Haley Are Wed
The kick-off for the American
Cancer Society’s Relay for Life
was held Jan. 24 at the Jefferson
Civic Center. The theme for this
year’s event was “Rockin’-n-Rollin’
cancer out of our lives.” Special
guest DJ, Keith “The Wolf man”
Ariail, kept this event rocking
with music from the 1950s.
Wayne and Heather Abbs,
Wayne Neal Chevrolet, presenting
sponsors for the event, welcomed
the crowd and thanked them for
their support of the 2008 Relay
for Life, coming up May 30-31 at
Peach State Speedway, Jefferson.
Wayne Abbs was an honorary
chairperson of the 2007 relay and
is a cancer survivor.
Sally Ekard and Dale Lister are
the 2008 honorary chairpersons;
both are cancer survivors. They
each spoke of their experiences
with cancer and their participa
tion in the relay every year. The
research that has been funded
by the American Cancer Society
has helped both of them in their
cancer surgeries and treatment,
they said.

Life Team is sponsoring the inau
gural “Ms. Cured for Life” beauty
pageant at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at
the Commerce Cultural Center.
Participants must have a pre-pur-
chased ticket from a contestant to
enter. There may be some tickets
left to purchase at the door. Seats
not claimed by 7 p.m. will be sold
on a first-come, first-served basis.

School, will be the mistress of cer-

Judy fought cancer for many
years and was a strong supporter
of the relay, working on the plan
ning committee for several years
as well as being a member of the
Jefferson First Baptist Church
team. She also served as an hon
orary chairperson for the relay.
Judy lost her battle with cancer.
Teams from the 2007 relay re
ceived their certificates as “Top
Performer.”

planning committee, inviting sur
vivors to come to the relay and

the piano as they walk. Vocalist
and recording artist Rahn Hatcher

The 2007 Ms. Jackson Creative
Queen, Lyndsy Floyd, will crown
the first Ms. Cured for Life queen.

dence of the bride and groom.
The groom is the son of Bob
Haley of Clearwater, FL, and the
late Judy Christien Lons, former
ly of Statham. He is the grandson
of Leslie Shea, Richmond, WA;
and the late Christien Kilpatrick,
Nicholson.
Mr. Haley is the father of April
and Richard Haley. He attended
Madison County High School.
He is employed by Keith Porter
Fireplace and Hillcrest Foods,
Jefferson.
The bride is the daughter of
Brenda Ayers, Athens. She is the
granddaughter of Grace Evelyn
Quesenberry, and the late Glenn
Quesenberry, formerly of Lacey,
WA.
She attended Ben L. Smith High
School, Greensboro, NC. She is
a homemaker with two daugh
ters, Keri and Kathy Greene, who
attend East Jackson Comprehen
sive High School.

performed the ceremony at the
groom’s home. The bride was
given in marriage by Jeff Sand
ers. The ceremony was attended
by close friends and co-workers.

Pageant To Benefit Relay

Commerce News, The Jackson Herald, The Madison County Journal, The
Braselton News and The Banks County News.
Access to the photos catalogue is available from a button on the
mainstreetnews.com website. The photos are hosted by DotPhoto
Inc., a firm which specializes in making prints from digital photo
graphs and which manages photos for a number of newspapers
across the country.
There will be approximately a one-week lag time between the time
photos are published and their availability at the online site.
Those who don’t have Internet access in their homes may visit area
public libraries that offer the service.
Food Bank Hours Are Announced
The hours of operation of the Banks-Jackson Emergency Food
Bank, located at 111 Atlanta Avenue, Commerce, are from 9:30 a.m.
to 1:30 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
The food bank provides one-time emergency food supplies for
individuals and families referred by churches or social service
groups.
AA Chapter Meets 5 Times Weekly
The Breezy Knob chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous meets five
times a week at 69 Central Avenue (across from First Commerce
Bank) in Commerce.
Meeting times are at 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and
Saturdays and at 6:45 p.m. Sundays. Meetings consist of open discus
sion.
