Senator Johnny Isakson, left, chats with Jackson County
Commissioners Jody Thompson, center, and Pat Bell during his
stopover in Jefferson.
Isakson: 'The Word
From Iraq Is Very Good'
By Angela Gary
The war on terrorism, immigra
tion and the economy are among
the issues Sen. Johnny Isakson
touched on when he made a stop
in Jefferson Monday to meet with
constituents.
More than 50 people were at
Jackson EMC Monday afternoon
to meet with Sen. Isakson. He
opened his brief comments with
the current situation in Iraq.
“The word from Iraq is very
good," he said. “I’ve gone to
Iraq every January since I’ve
been in the Senate. One month
ago, when I went to Iraq, amaz
ing things were happened.
First thing, I flew into Bagdad
International Airport, got into
a Chevy Suburban and drove
into town. Before, I couldn’t have
done that. We were always in
Blackhawks or helicopters. It’s
not the safest place in the world
but compared to before, it is
unbelievable ... There is a remark
able difference.’’
Isakson said Iraq has taken the
actions necessary for the United
States to change its presence
from a “combat role to an over
sight role.’’
“We will be able to scale down
our presence there and Iraq will
be a free and functioning democ
racy,’’ he said.
On the subject of terrorism,
Isakson said he was disap
pointed that the U.S. House of
Representatives did not vote to
extend the Foreign Intelligence
Surveillance Act. He said this
legislation is crucial in the war on
terrorism.
Isakson also spoke on the econ
omy and said leaders need to
address the cause of the prob
lem, which he said is the housing
market. He said “easy credit and
shoddy underwriting’’ led to the
problem.
In an effort to address that
problem, Isakson is proposing
a $15,000 tax credit for anyone
buying a home in foreclosure.
“We have to get buyers back in
the market,’’ he said.
On the immigration issue,
Isakson said it is wrong to let the
illegal “flow from the Southwest’’
continue.
The Jesters To Return
For New Year's Party
The Jesters will be back in
Commerce Dec. 31 to again help
ring in the New Year.
Brad Johnson, president of
the Commerce Area Business
Association, announced at the
group’s Feb. 13 meeting that the
CABA board of directors has voted
to retain the popular Athens group
for its 2008 party.
That’s because the 2007 party
was so successful. The CABA sold
more than 400 tickets to the party,
and 66 people took advantage of
the pre-dance catered meal.
“Everything went better than we
really expected,’’ Johnson noted.

Commissioners Deny Developer's
Request For Change In Zoning Conditions
By Angela Gary
A request from a developer
to remove the condition in her
zoning that requires a fence to
be installed between a planned
subdivision and adjoining prop
erty was denied Monday night
by the Jackson County Board of
Commissioners.
Susan Campbell had asked that
the fence requirement not be in
place for Wicklow Subdivision,
located on Boone Road in West
Jackson. The site is 18.9 acres
and plans call for 18 lots.
John Boone, whose family has
owned a farm on the road since
the 1940s, asked that the request
be denied for safety reasons.
Boone said his concerns include
that children from the subdivi
sion could fall in chicken pits.
“This is one of those areas
where we have a residential
community beside of an active
agricultural property,’’ commis
sioner Tom Crow said. “We need
to maintain that protection.’’
On another matter, the BOC
agreed to pay Mcjunkin Realty
Services up to $225,000 for the
right-of-way, pre-acquisition and
acquisition of 55 parcels on Zion
Church Road. The BOC and
county industrial development
authority agreed to upgrade this
road as part of the 2004 eco
nomic bond package.
The proposed improvements
include new construction to
realign 1.6 miles of road and
upgrade 0.4 mile of existing
roadway. The total cost of the
project will be $9 million.
Other Business
In other business, the BOC:
• approved a preconstruc
tion engineering agreement
with the Georgia Department
of Transportation for the Hwy.
53/Braselton-Hoschton Bypass
project. This project will be fund
ed through the 2008 economic
development road program.

with DOT regulations.
•approved a Tow bid prefer
ence’’ policy.
•set the qualifying fee for
solicitor general at $1,913.
•proclaimed Feb. 16-23 as

Creek Road. He said signs will
