Mended Hearts Celebrates
Its Fifteenth Birthday
The BJC Mended Hearts Chapter No. 171 is celebrating its
15th anniversary. Left to right are George Evans, president,
Jerry Archer, Nancy Stancil, Theron Stancil and Inez Mize with a
resolution introduced by Rep. Tommy Benton and passed by the
Georgia House of Representatives recognizing the group. The
organization is for heart patients and their families and it meets
the third Monday of each month in the BJC Hospital conference
room at 7 p.m.
February is American Heart
Month and Mended Hearts,
a national heart patient sup
port group affiliated with the
American Heart Association,
has a number of services avail
able to local heart patients this
month and throughout the year.
The core of the organization’s
services is its patient-to-patient
visitor program. Heart patient
volunteers specifically trained
and accredited by Mended
Hearts visit other patients, either
before or after surgery during
hospital stays. Visits may also
be made to non-surgical patients
such as those diagnosed with
angina, hypertension or heart
attack. Last year, accredited vol
unteers nationwide made more
than 224,000 visits to heart
patients, their families and care
givers in person, online or by
phone.
“We offer tangible proof that
there can be a quality life associ
ated with heart disease, despite
the challenges,’’ says Theron
Stancil, visitor chairperson of
Chapter 171. “The good news
is that due to advances in treat
ment and diagnosis, there are
more and more procedures and
patients recovering than ever
before. However, that also means
that there is an increasing num
ber of patients who need the
reassurance and emotional sup
port that comes most effectively
from someone who has 'been
there.’ Listening is an important
part of the visit and it helps the
patient to know they’re with
someone who has been through
a similar experience.’’
Mended Hearts partners local
ly with BJC Medical Center, St.
Mary’s Hospital and the BJC
Rehab Clinic in providing its
visitor program. All visits are
made with hospital and/or phy
sician approval or referral.
In addition to encouragement,
the trained visitors also provide
educational information, such
as recommendations for healthy
lifestyle choices and tips for
medication adherence, along
with suggestions for managing
possible depression, a common
aftermath of a heart event.
While most of the visits are
conducted in person, online and
phone visits are also options,
according to Stancil.
“Additionally, we offer ongo
ing connections through regular
chapter meetings,’’ Stancil said.
“We encourage patients to join
us for these sessions that offer
peer support and feature guest
speakers on topics relevant to
the recovering patient.
Mended Hearts may be
reached by calling Stancil at
706-335-3476 or nationally at
