Gwinnett Firefighter Dies In Friday Wreck
A Gwinnett County fireman was killed and two people were
injured in a cross-over accident on Interstate 85 shortly after
9:30 Friday morning. Officials at the scene said a southbound
pickup truck pulling a trailer hauling another vehicle spun out of
control just south of the North Oconee River bridge, crossed the
median and struck a northbound Ford F150 pickup truck (second
vehicle from the right) head-on, killing Lt. Don Kirkpatrick, 46, of
Hartwell, who was returning to his home at the time. The south
bound vehicles also struck a fourth vehicle, injuring the driver,
who was the only occupant. He was transported to Northeast
Georgia Regional Medical Center. The driver of the southbound
vehicle was taken to BJC Medical center. The wreck closed the
northbound lanes of I-85 for more than four hours, and traffic
was diverted through Commerce.
