of their daughter, Holly Eliza
beth Brown, to John Christopher
Love, son of the late Pamela Sue
Love, formerly of Commerce.
They will be united in mar
riage at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, April
12, at Homer Baptist Church. All
friends and family are invited to
attend.
Miss Brown is the granddaugh
ter of Malise Brown, Commerce,
and the late Hyman Brown; and
the late Mr. and Mrs. Guy Daves,
formerly of Commerce.
She is a 2005 graduate of Banks
County High School, works full
time at Hyman Brown Insurance
Agency in Commerce, and is en
rolled in online classes in pursuit
of a business degree.
Mr. Love is the grandson of Mr.
and Mrs. Henry Cheatham of
Commerce.
He is a 2004 graduate of Banks
County High School and is em
ployed by Southeastern Toyota
Distributors.
'Folktales And Songs' Set
In Jefferson On March 29
“Words and Music: Stories
through Lolktales and Song" will
be presented by the Crawford W.
Long Museum March 29 at the
Jefferson clubhouse. Programs are
scheduled for 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
The afternoon program is suit
able for all ages, but is geared to
ward families with children under
age 12. Leatured artists are sto
ryteller Donna Butler of Jackson
County and Athens musician Su
san Staley.
Butler and the Solstice Sisters, in
cluding Staley, Maggie Hunter and
Anna Durden, will perform at the 7
p.m. show.
The artists will also speak about
their respective crafts, placing them
within an appropriate context in
the cultural history of this region.
The purpose of the program is to
showcase the arts of storytelling
and folk music as both entertain
ment and history lessons in the
small towns and rural areas of the
Georgia Piedmont.
“Words and Music" is partially
funded by Georgia’s Grassroots
Arts Program (GAP).
Contest Seeks Oratory On
Conservative Social Issues
An oratory contest for high
school juniors and seniors in
Banks, Clarke, Jackson, Lranklin,
Madison and Oconee counties is
planned.
Each contestant is asked to pre
pare and deliver a five to seven
minute speech on one or more of
the following subjects: stem cell
research, euthanasia, abortion
and infanticide.
Applications to participate are
due by April 2 and should be

'Gardening Open House'
Planned Tuesday At FUMC
The Commerce Garden Club Council invites the public to join them
for a “Spring Gardening Open House" Tuesday, March 25, from 4 to
6 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the Lirst United Methodist Church of
Commerce.
All members of the four local garden clubs are hosting this event.
There is no admission charge. The purpose is to promote good gar
dening in Commerce and to host an event which provides gardening
advice. Refreshments will be served.
Coupons, brochures, flyers, posters or displays relating to gardening

Mended Hearts Offering Two
$500 Scholarships To Seniors
BJC Mended Hearts Chapter 171 offers two $500 scholarships to lo
cal students.
Applicants must write a letter stating their intent — including goals
and plans — for contributing to some area of medicine. The Scholar
ship Committee will review the completed letters and may interview
the applicants before the final recipients are selected.
The deadline for letters of application is April 15, and an applicant
may submit more than one application. The scholarship will be award
ed in May.

Founder's Son Raising Money
With Run Across Gobi Desert
Distance runner John Lindsay of Jefferson will run 150 miles across
the Gobi Desert in Kashi, China, beginning June 8 to raise funds for the
Lindsay’s Legacy Mentoring Program.
He is accepting donations per mile, with proceeds to benefit the local
mentoring program named in honor of his father, the first mentor coordi
nator, the late Rev. Jack P. Lindsay.
The Gobi March (www.4deserts.com/gobimarch) follows the ancient
Silk Road and takes approximately 5 1/2 days to complete, as partici
pants run 25 to 30 miles a day through some of the most extreme desert
conditions on earth.
Lindsay’s Legacy is an in-school community-wide mentoring program
that pairs trained community volunteers with area school children identi
fied by school officials as needing crucial mentoring support. The pro
gram has 127 trained mentors working in the three local school systems
with 157 students being served. Mentors are role models, confidants,
advocates, counselors, friends and tutors. The program is administered
through Lamily Connection, and is named after the Rev. Lindsay.
“I assure you that all funds will go directly to support the training of the
mentors and costs directly associated with the administration and per
petuation of the program," John Lindsay said.

The Georgia Department of
Human Resources LIHEAP pro
gram, which helps pay heating
costs for natural gas, has been
extended.
Households that have not al
ready received any kind of en
ergy assistance since Nov. 1,
2007, may start calling now.
One-time payments will be
made by checks issued to the
home energy suppliers on be
half of eligible households. Eli
gibility for the program is based
on the income of everyone liv
ing in the home.
All eligible households must
be responsible for their home
heating bill.
When applying for assistance,
persons will be required to bring
for everyone in the home, verifi
cation of all household income
received within the past 30 days
(check stubs, public assistance
checks, unemployment checks,
etc.), verification of Social Se
curity numbers for everyone in
the home, and the most recent
home heating bill.
All interested applicants in
Jackson and Banks counties
are asked to contact Ninth

The bride is the granddaughter
of Sara Ruth Prickett, Commerce,
and the late Styles Prickett; and
the late Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Sim
mons Sr., formerly of Comer.
She is a 1997 graduate of Com
merce High School and a 2001
graduate of the University of
Georgia, from which she holds a
bachelor’s degree in business ad
ministration in marketing. She is
a physician recruiter for Merritt
Hawkins and Associates.
The groom is the grandson of
Mildred Crabtree, Pas Robles, CA;
and the late Mr. and Mrs. Nelson
Madden, formerly of Danville, IL.
He is a 1998 graduate of Bis
marck Henning High School in
Illinois. He graduated from Toc-
coa Lalls College in 2005 with a
degree in communications. He is
employed at Engineering Devel
opment Team as an engineering

Pat Johnson, Watkinsville, who spent a month in Africa, learning
how to photograph wild animals from a National Geographic pho
tographer, was the guest speaker at the March 13 meeting of the
Jackson County Retired Educators at East Jackson Comprehensive
High School. She spoke about her trip into Nairobi and the rainfor
est of Rwanda. Johnson, left, presented a scrapbook of some of
