Eagles Lose To Eastside, Jackson Co.
By Brandon Reed
Time is running out for the East
Jackson Eagles if they hope to
put a check in the win column in
their first season.
Last week, the team fell to
Eastside and to Jackson County
on the road. Their last shot at
victory is expected to come next
Wednesday in a makeup game
against Franklin County resched
uled from last Friday due to
stormy weather.
The week started with a trip
to Covington to face Eastside,
which entered the match with a
4-9 record. East Jackson came
up short, losing 3-1. Ricardo
Saragoza scored the team’s only
goal.
On Thursday, the Eagles traveled
to Jefferson to face the Jackson
County Panthers. It proved to
be another close match, but in
the end, the Eagles found them
selves on the losing end of a 2-1
score. Alex Love scored the lone
East Jackson goal of the game.
The Eagles faced Franklin
County on Friday, but was halt
ed due to lightning. The teams
hope to make that game up next
Wednesday.

way to pit road, the cars of
Kevin Perry of Jefferson and
Roger Delp of Newnan tangled
on the front stretch, bringing
out the caution.
Since laps under caution do
not count, that allowed Fleeman
to change the tire, and rejoin
the race at the back of the pack
without losing a lap.
The last caution of the day flew
when Marietta’s Cody Haskins
spun on the backstretch, while
Fleeman spun while trying to
avoid Haskins. Both were able
to continue.
On the restart, Pollard pulled
away, and would not be seri
ously challenged again the
rest of the day. While Pollard
enjoyed about a nine-second
lead, Fleeman began thunder
ing back towards the front. A
late pass on Wes Burton and
Richard Johns gave Fleeman
a second place finish. Max
Gresham rounded out the top
five.
Pollard said he would have
rather been able to race Fleeman
for the victory.
“We didn’t want to win this
one this way. It was early in the
race when he went out. I would
have liked to see what we had
for him. We were still pretty
quick at the end. Even after
coming in and working on it,
he still should have been pretty
good with new right side tires.
We were a little quicker on the
stopwatch at the end. I would
have liked to see how it went at
the end against him.’’
Jefferson’s Nick Potts would
finish sixth, Chris Horton fin
ished seventh, Braselton’s
Jimmy Garmon finished in
eighth, Kyle Mitchell ninth and
Jefferson’s Joey Senter finished

The Georgia Asphalt series
now moves on to the Anderson
Motor Speedway in Anderson,
S.C. for their next event on
April 11. The tour will return to
Peach State on May 3.
It was also an interesting
event for the local divisions,
where several of the finishers
were later disqualified.
First, in the mini-stock event,
William Earnest inherited the
victory after Troy French,
who was flagged the winner,
failed post race inspection. Ken
Cadiotti was credited with sec
ond, followed by Aaron Calvert
and Wayne Smith.
The scariest moment of the
race came during the mini-stock
event, when David Cochran
blew an engine on the front
stretch, coming to stop on the
front straightaway. With smoke
obscuring the track, Darrell
Carlson made heavy contact
with the rear of Cochran’s vehi
cle. Both cars sustained heavy
damage, but there were no inju
ries.
In the Super Truck event,
Homer’s Wes Whitfield picked
up the win after Paul Antley
was disqualified after failing
post-race inspection. Second
place was awarded to Andy
Gaddis, followed by Matthew
Rouse and James Davidson.
Hoyt Stephens held off Russell
Shore to win in the Outlaw
Late Model division. Shore’s
car failed post race inspection,
moving Phil Peppers to the sec
ond spot. Terry Martin took
third, while Brian Hardman fin
ished fourth.
In the sportsman division,
Robbie Gonterman led early
and never looked back, taking
the win over Richard Kind, Keith
Barrett and Chuck Copper.
Local racing returns to Peach
State on April 19.

East Jackson’s girls’ soccer
team is on a streak, winning
four games in a row on the
road. This past week, the Lady
Eagles beat Eastside, Jackson
County and Elbert County.
Friday’s scheduled game with
Franklin County was rained out,
and is rescheduled for April 16.
East Jackson began its week
with at Eastside on Tuesday,
April 1, and they weren’t fool
ing around. The Lady Eagles
led 2-1 going into the half,
scored quickly at the start of
the second half, then moved
away for the 5-2 win. Aubrey
Cozzens scored two goals,
while Dakota Chandler, Kassie
Mull and Jazmin Flores scored
one each.
On Thursday, the Lady Eagles
moved on to Jackson County to
knock off the Lady Panthers, 4-1.
Chandler scored the first Eagle
hat trick in history, slotted three
goals. Larissa Cozzens also
scored once against Jackson
County, while Brittney Blackwell
had an assist. Abby Adams had
14 saves at the goal.
“The game was a lot closer than
the score indicates,’’ said coach
Bob Roller. “Jackson was down
there shooting all the time. We
just made the most out of our
opportunities to shoot.’’
After Friday’s scheduled game
with Franklin was rained out, the
girls moved traveled to Elbert
County Saturday, where they
hammered out an 8-2 victory.
Despite playing in the rain,
Bre Standridge, Flores and
Aubrey Cozzens scored two
goals apiece, while Cassie Mull
and Courtney Wainwright each
scored one.
Larissa Cozzens had six saves,
while Katie McEver had one.
Saturday’s victory makes the
Lady Eagles 7-8 with four wins
in a row coming after the previ
ous week’s 4-1 victory over Hart
County.
Roller says the difference with
the team now and earlier in the
year is everyone is healthy.
“We were shorthanded so
often,’’ he said. “The difference
is we’re kind of injury free right
now. The girls are also playing
better soccer, and starting to
come together.’’
Next up for East Jackson is
the makeup game with Franklin
County, which has been tenta
tively scheduled for April 16.
