The Commerce Tiger golf
teams earned berths in the
state tournaments by placing
second in the Region 8-A tour
naments.
The boys placed second to
Athens Academy (294-314) and
the girls to Jefferson (180-195).
For the boys, Hamp Gary
and Casey Drinkard both shot
77, Colton Dean recorded a
78, Taylor Gary shot an 82,
Sam Purcell carded an 89, and
Austin Patterson shot a 97.
Only the four lowest scores
count in the team total.
“Athens Academy is defend
ing state champion, so finish
ing second to them is nothing
to be ashamed of," Stephenson
said. “They played tremendous
golf; 314 is a good score for
us.
CHS Tennis
“Colton Dean really came
through for us. His 78 was a
career best. We were five shots
down to Prince Avenue after
the first three scores were post
ed. After his score we were 10
shots ahead and that is what
secured our spot in the state
tournament. Hamp and Casey
posted really solid scores,
although both could have been
a few shots better. Taylor had
an off day with his putter but
I am confident he will fix it
before the state tournament.’'
For the girls, C.J. Wilkes shot
a 97, Chelsey Cain recorded a
98, Callie Adams finished at
104, and Katelyn Nevil shot a
106. Only the two best scores
count toward the team total.
Split With Jefferson
The golf teams wrapped up
their regular season by splitting
a match with Jefferson. The
boys won 156-181, while the
girls narrowly lost, 98-99.
For the boys, Hamp Gary shot
a 36, Drinkard a 39, Dean a 40
and Taylor Gary a 41. Purcell
carded a 44, and Patterson shot
a 46.
“Hamp had a great day includ
ing an eagle and birdie on con
secutive holes,’’ coach David
Stephenson said. “Casey played
well as did Colton. Overall it
was a good team score.’’
For the girls, Wilkes finished
at 47, Cain shot a 52, Nevil
recorded a 57, and Adams shot
a 61.
“C.J. played her best round,’’
Stephenson said. “It was one
of the lowest girls scores we’ve
had in a while. The whole girls’
team has made tremendous
improvement this year.’’
Emma Turner parlayed her con
siderable basketball skill into a
four-year scholarship at a private
college.
Turner, the Eagles defensive
player of the year, signed with
Brenau College last week. The
scholarship will cover about
$24,000 a year in college-relat
ed expenses, said Eagles Coach
Amy Larimer.
Turner played forward and
center, lettering three years at
Jackson County Comprehensive
High School before finishing her
career in East Jackson’s first-year
program. She also received the
team’s academic award for bas
ketball.
Turner blocked 77 shots dur
ing her senior season, averaging
three a game, and pulled down
189 rebounds, an average of seven
a game and leading the Lady
Eagles in both categories.
“She is great leader on and
off the court and has worked
extremely hard to get to the point
were she is right now,’’ Larimer

Commerce Wraps Up Season
By Brandon Reed
The Commerce Tigers wrapped up their tennis
season earlier this month. On April 1, the Tigers
traveled to Athens Christian, where the Eagles
swept both the boys and the girls 5-0.
The teams were scheduled to wrap up their
season by hosting Tallulah Falls, but the rematch
between the two teams was cancelled due to
rain.
The Tigers took the results from their first
meeting with Tallulah Falls, back on March 11,
as the region results, therefore ending up fourth
on their side of the sub-region.
Commerce had an unfortunate draw in the
region tournament, playing Athens Academy in
the first round. The Spartans handily defeated
the Tigers and went on to win both the boys and
girls region championships.
“Congratulations to them,’’ said Commerce
coach Blake Rodenroth. “I look for them to
make a deep run if not win it all at state.’’
The Commerce boys ended the season with a
3-9 record, while the girls finished at 2-9.
Despite a rough year, Rodenroth said his team
had fun.
“It has been a long year in terms of wins and
losses but we had a lot of fun and the kids
stayed together through it all,” he said. “We
don’t lose too many seniors, so most every one
will be coming back next year.”
