Tigers Take Second In Regionals
By Brandon Reed
The Commerce Tiger girls’ track and field
team took second overall in the Region 8-A
Finals at Jefferson over the weekend. Out of
seven schools participating, Commerce fin
ished second only to Athens Christian, 133-92.
Commerce was tied with Jefferson for second
going into the 4x400. Jefferson had two teams
in the final eight with the top six scoring.
The lady Tigers won the event beating Athens
Christian, and setting a new school record time
of 4:12.07. Athens Christian finished second
with a time of 4:12.20.
“This was one of the best races I have seen
in a long time," said coach Pam Canup. “Our
girls showed great heart and competitiveness
all day."
Other Tigers placing in the meet included
Ellie Hardigree with sixth in the shot and first
in the discus. Jasmine Grier tied for third in the
high jump, Lauren Jones finishing fifth in the
high jump, Kaylin Canup won second in the
long jump, and Brittany Sewell took third in
the triple jump. Vanessa Bell finished second in
the 400-meters, Amber Bell placed sixth in the
400-meters, Sewell won the 100 and 200-meters,
Canup placed sixth in the 100-meters, and Grier
finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles.
The 4x100 team of Grier, Canup, Chandler
and Sewell took first place. Sewell and Canup
have been region champs on the 4x100 for four
years. All first and second place finishers will

Just when the Tigers need it the
most, they get to travel to Tallulah
Falls.
It won’t be for the scenery.
After dropping games last week
to Athens Academy and Athens
Christian last week, the Tigers
will hope to turn their fortunes
around on Thursday, against the
winless (0-13) Indians. Game time
is 5 p.m.
Athens Academy
The Tigers played Athens
Academy last Tuesday, hot off of
a 6-5 win over Towns County. The
Commerce faithful hoped their
team would be able to generate
some momentum from the win
to carry them into the final eight
games of the season.
It didn’t happen.
Things started out well for
Commerce, as they put four runs
on the board in the bottom of the
first. They added a run in the bot
tom of the third to go up 5-0, but
then the wheels began to come
off.
The Spartans put four runners
across the plate in that inning, and
repeated that in the fifth and sixth
innings, to lead 12-5. Commerce
would score only once more, in
the bottom of the sixth, but could
get no closer, as Athens Academy
won 12-6.
Jake Flint went 2-for-3 at the
plate, with a single and a home
run. Cohen Cooke also went
2-for-3, singling twice. Reuben
Haynes and T Green each had
hits.
Carl Allen recorded the loss,
allowing two hits and four runs.
Athens Christian
Commerce entered Thursday’s
match-up with the Athens
Christian Eagles looking to find a
winning groove again. But things
got ugly early, as a series of walks
and five runs by Athens Christian
in the first two innings set the
tone.
Commerce tried to start a rally
by getting a run across in the
third, but the Eagles scored in
every inning but the sixth, includ
ing three in the top of the fifth.
When the smoke cleared, Athens
Christian had won 11-1.
Green went 2-for-3 with a pair of
singles, and Cook, Flint, Haynes,
Flint and Allen had hits.
Haynes recorded the loss on the
mound, giving up three hits and
five runs while striking out five in
two innings.
Moving On
Coach Walt Massey said the
number of walks in the Tigers’
two previous games, 24, tells all
that needs to be known about last
week’s games.
“We walked 11 on Tuesday and
13 on Thursday,’’ he said. “Throw
in a couple of untimely errors,
and you’ve just made winning
nearly an impossibility.
“Offensively, we didn’t have
much to show for some pretty
decent at-bats. We only struck
out 10 times in the two games,
and that’s about as good as we
can expect against the quality of
pitching we saw. However, we still
leave too many runners on base,
and just can’t seem to find the big
hit or big inning we need when
we are so close.’’
Commerce was scheduled to
host Jefferson on Tuesday. Results
were unavailable at press time.
