'Miss Aerie'And Court
The first annual Junior Miss and Miss Aerie Pageant was held
March 21 at East Jackson Comprehensive High School. Winners
of the senior division were, left to right, Chelsea Kyst, second
runner-up and “Miss Congeniality”; Ashley Norris, “Miss Aerie”;
and Caroline Sexton, first runner-up.

Art Work To Be On Display
Four Kings Bridge Middle School students, Keven Meehan,
Blake Campbell, Savannah Justice, and Nelly Sarabia, were
selected to have their artwork shown at Bear Hollow Memorial
Park in Athens through May 20. Their work competed in the
29th Annual Bear Hollow Art Contest. Keven Meehan placed
first in the event and Blake Campbell won third. Left to right are

Gov.'s Honors Finalists
Two East Jackson Comprehen
sive High School students have
been named as finalists for the
2008 Governor’s Honors Program
(GHP).
Marilyn Zumwalt, a junior at
EJCHS, will participate in GHP
this summer as a chemistry major.
She is the daughter of Jon and
Georgia Zumwalt, Jefferson.
Erika Deshon, also a junior,
was selected to participate this
summer as a mathematics major.
She is the daughter of Brian and
Jennifer Deshon, Nicholson.
The Governor’s Honors Program
is sponsored by the Georgia
Department of Education to
reward the state’s highest achiev
ing students in academics and
fine arts. The Governor’s Honors
Program serves the top 1/ 10th
of one percent of Georgia’s stu
dents.
The selection process for GHP
is very competitive and includes
a resume of student accomplish
ments, teacher recommenda
tions, PSAT scores and personal
interviews. Students chosen for
the program will attend classes,
lectures and lab activities for six
weeks this summer on the Campus
of Valdosta State University.
Commerce Student Andrew Murray
Wins $1,000 Chick-fil-A Scholarship
Chick-fil-A Inc. will award a $1,000 scholarship to Andrew Murray
of Commerce.
Murray will use the money to attend Gainesville State College as he
pursues a pharmacology degree.
Murray joins eight other scholarship students at the Chick-fil-A res
taurant at Banks Crossing, which is operated by Margaret Phillips.
Retired Educators To Meet May 15
The Jackson County Retired Educators Association will install its
2008-2009 officers at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 15, with Kate Finch,
Area 17 director, officiating.
The meeting will be at the Gordon Street Center in Jefferson.
All retired educators are invited.
Evening School Sets Graduation May 22
The Regional Evening School will hold graduation at 7 p.m. Thursday,
May 22, in the gymnasium. A reception will follow.
The school is located on Gordon Street, Jefferson.
