S. Jackson May
Get Full-Time
Medical Vehicle
JEFFERSON - A proposal to
approve a full-time medical unit
in the South Jackson area will go
to the Jackson County Board of
Commissioners at 6 p.m. Monday
May 19.
EMS Director Steve Nichols pre
sented the proposal to the com
missioners Monday night. He said
the new unit would be in service
24 hours a day seven days a week
to serve the South Jackson and
Redstone districts. He asked that
the new unit be in service as of
July 1.
Nichols said the new unit will
improve the response time for med
ical calls from the South Jackson
area, Nicholson and Jefferson from
12-17 minutes currently to 5-7 min
utes. The Nicholson and Jefferson
units now respond to calls from
South Jackson.
Nichols said 5,318 addresses, or
approximately 13,200 people are
served in the South Jackson dis
trict. In the past year, 213 calls
have come from the South Jackson
district.
The move is expected to cost
$435,600 a year.
Company Seeks
Rezoning To
Allow Expansion
JEFFERSON - The Jackson
County Board of Commissioners
is considering a rezoning request
that would lead to an expansion of
Athens Stonecasting.
Rick Raymond and Associates
requests a rezoning on behalf of
Athens Stonecasting to change the
classification of 145.96 acres at 191
Richmar Road from A-2 to G-I. The
company manufactures concrete
items.
The company plans to update
and automate its facility, create a
new retail area and office and to
increase the storage area.
The BOC discussed the request
at a work session Monday night.
Action will be taken at 6 p.m.
Monday, May 19, at the courthouse
in Jefferson.
Bubba McDonald
Qualifies For
Seat On State PSC
Bubba McDonald is making yet
another foray into politics.
The former Commerce resident,
former state
representa
tive and one
time candi
date for gov
ernor quali
fied Monday
to run for
the Public
Service
Commission.
McDonald, McDonald
of Clarkes-
ville, qualified Monday as a
republican to run for Post 4 on
the commission that oversees
utility rates in Georgia. His plat
form is the repeal of sales taxes
on utilities.
T’m running to make a dif
ference for our state,” said
McDonald. “There’s no question
that we should be bringing even
more competition into the state
to help lower energy bills for
Georgians. We need to ensure
that Georgians have a safe, reli
able and affordable energy sup
ply for the future.”
McDonald served on the PSC
from 1998 through 2002, hav
ing been appointed by Gov.
Zell Miller after Mac Barber of
Commerce resigned. He seeks
the post held by Angela Speir,
who has indicated she will not
seek re-election.
McDonald is a native and long
time resident of Commerce,
where he served as chief of the
Commerce Fire Department,
served on the Jackson County
Board of Commissioners and
had a long career in the Georgia
House of Representatives that
ended when he ran unsuccess
fully for governor in 1996.
“People are feeling the pain
of higher energy costs, particu
larly in the dead of winter and
in the hot Georgia summer,” said
McDonald. “If elected to serve,
I will work on the legislature to
eliminate charging the state sales
tax on energy bills during these
times. My plan will reduce the
overall cost of energy bills when
Georgians need it the most and
would apply to all residential
customers.”
The Republican Primary is July
15.
Safety Upgrade
Of Intersection
Begins In June
A hearing will be held in the
next few weeks on a planned
safety upgrade at the intersec
tion of Hwy. 15 (the Commerce-
Jefferson Road) and South Apple
Valley Road.
The Georgia Department of
Transportation will take input
on the project from 4 to 6 p.m.
Thursday, May 22, in the jury
assembly room at the courthouse
in Jefferson.
The area has become more con
gested due to the opening of the
East Jackson elementary, middle
and high schools, all of which
can be accessed off Hwy. 15 via
South Apple Valley Road.
Right of way acquisition
began in February, and con
struction is planned to begin
in June. Hwy. 15 will be closed
for approximately 60 to 90 days
to complete the project and
South Apple Valley Road will
be closed on the Hwy. 15 end
for a time as well.
The plans have been in the
works for over a year. The proj
ect involves both local and state
road funds.
Eight Miles Of
County Roads To

Road, Smallwood Drive and
W.H. Hayes Road.
The road work will be funded
with $351,302 in DOT funds and
$259,465 in special purpose local
option sales tax revenue.
