Meet The Honor Graduates Of the CHS Class Of 2008
To Be Selected As Honor Graduates,
Members Of The CHS Class Of 2008 Had
To Maintain An Average Of 90 Or Better For
Their High School Careers

They comprise 37 percent of
the Class of 2008, all but one
plan to go to college (the other
to Athens Tech) and their favor
ite subjects are English (includ
ing literature) and math. Meet
the 26 honor graduates of
Commerce High School.
Six plan to attend the
University of Georgia and all
but one will continue their
educations in Georgia. Their
taste in reading runs from the
autobiography of Billy Graham
to "Wuthering Heights," with
a preference for the classics.
They are, in order of their
ranking, Win Blair, Wes
Lewis, Chessie Hacker, Kaylin
Canup, Kristina McFadden,
Reuben Haynes, Belen Montes,
Camille Blair, Andrea Briscoe,
Jon Ariail, Katelyn Nevil,
Amber Haggard, Cohen Cooke,
Amber Bell, Jacob Denton,
Morgan Mather, Megan Lord,
Ann Culter, Heather Gamble,
Felicia Jordan, Katie Kujawa,
LaTravia Lester, Jacob Flint,
Ellie Hardigree, Hamp Gary
and Victoria Neisler.
Win Blair, son of Charles
and Johnnie Blair, was the
valedictorian, STAR student,
attended the Governor's
Honors Program, won the
UGA Certificate of Merit, was
voted "most responsible" by
his class and was elected "Mr.
CHS" by the faculty. He was
active in the Beta Club, Future
Business Leaders of America
(FBLA), HOSA, Horizons,
Commerce Leaders and Super
Students (CLASS) and was on
the yearbook staff and the First
Georgia Bank Junior Advisory
Board. He will attend UGA.
Wes Lewis, son of Dean
Lewis and Lesa Whitlock Lewis,
was the salutatorian, He was
voted "most likely to succeed,"
received the UGA Certificate
of Merit, and was active in the
Literary Club, BETA, CLASS,
FBLA, cross country and the
Academic Team. He served on
the First Georgia Bank Junior
Advisory Board and plans to
attend UGA.
Chessie Hacker, daughter
of Glen and Joy Hacker, was
active in BETA and Horizons.
She plans to attend college
this fall.
Kaylin Canup, daugh
ter of Terry and Pam Canup,
was active in Beta, Key Club,
Y-Club, FRBPA, CLASS, served
on the student council and
played softball, basketball and
ran track. She is a Georgia
Merit Scholar and the U.S.
Army Scholar-Athlete. She will
attend Young Harris College.
Kristina McFadden,
daughter of Dr. Don and Carol
McFadden, was voted "most
talented" in her class. She was
in the CHS Band's dance line,
Beta, CLASS and Key Club. She
will attend Georgia Southern
University.
Reuben Haynes, son of
Mickey and Mona Haynes,
played football, where he
received numerous hon
ors, including the Wendy's
Heisman Award. He was named
a Greater Atlanta Chapter
National Football Foundation
Top 40 Scholar Athlete, was a
member of the Fellowship of
Christian Athletes (FCA) and
plans to attend Lenoir-Rhyne
College.
Belen Montes, daughter
of Alejandro and Marlene
Montes, was active in Beta and
cross country and was a mem
ber of the First Georgia Bank
Junior Advisory Board. She
will attend UGA.
Camille Blair, daughter
of Charles and Johnnie Blair,
was active in FBLA, FCCLA,
CLASS, Horizons, Beta Club,
Key Club and Student Council.
She played on the golf team
and was voted "most likely
to succeed." She will attend
UGA.
Andrea Briscoe, daughter
of Paula and Johnny Briscoe,
participated in Beta, FBLA,
served as a cheerleader and
was a member of the First
Georgia Bank Junior Board of
Directors. She was class trea
surer and voted "most depend
able." She will attend UGA.
Jon Arial, son of Rick and
Luci Ariail, was active in BETA,
Class and the CHS Marching
Band. He will attend North
Georgia College and State
University.
Katelyn Nevil, daughter of
Carol Streetman, was active
in the Key Club, Beta, FBLA,
FCCLA, FCA, CLASS, was a
cheerleader and played on the
golf team. She was secretary
of her class and was voted
"Miss Homecoming." She
will attend the University of
Georgia.
Amber Haggard, daugh
ter of Wade Haggard and Ann
Daves, played softball and
was a member of CLASS. She
will attend Gainesville State
College.
Cohen Cooke, son of Alan
and Connie Cooke, was active
in FCA, CLASS, was voted
"friendliest" in his class,
played football and basketball.
He will attend Kennesaw State
College.
Amber Bell, daughter
of Lynn and Steve Bell, was
active in CLASS and served on
the Student Council. She ran
track and is a volunteer for
the Commerce and Jefferson
libraries and the Athens home
less shelter. She will attend
either UGA or Kennesaw State
University.
Jacob Denton, son of Kay
Denton, was active in the Band
and Beta Club. He will attend
college in the fall.
Morgan Mather, daughter
of Scott and Sheila Mather,
was a member of the Beta
Club. She will attend Abraham
Baldwin Agricultural College.
Megan Lord, daughter of
Keith Lord and Michele Fields,
played softball and was a
member of the Beta Club. She
will attend Georgia Southern
University.
Ann Cutler, daughter of
Clark and Cindy Cutler, was
active in CLASS, FCCLA and
the Beta Club and played soft-
ball and tennis. She was in the
BJC Medical Explorer Program
and plans to attend Brenau
University.
Heather Gamble, son of
Kim Brank and Dane Gamble,
was in the FCCLA and Beta
Club and served on the
Color Guard. She will attend
Gainesville College.
Felicia Jordan, son of Fred
and Shelby Jordan, was active
in Beta Club and will attend
Athens Technical College.
Katie Kujawa, daugh
ter of Jack and Lisa Kujawa,
was active in the band and in
CLASS. She was voted "friend
liest" by her peers and will
attend Emmanuel College.
LaTravia Lester, daughter of
Cory and Latrista Buffington,
served on the Student Council
and was active in FCCLA. She
will attend Savannah State
University.
Jacob Flint, son of David
and Sandi Flint, was in the
Beta Club and played foot
ball, basketball and baseball.
He was voted "best all around"
in his class and will attend
Gainesville State College.
Ellie Hardigree, daughter
of Mark and Lisa Hardigree,
was active in Beta and FCA
and participated in track
and softball. She was voted
"most unforgettable" by her
class and will attend North
Georgia College and State
University.
Hamp Gary, son of Ronald
and Alma Grace Gary, was
president of the senior class
and was active in CLASS, Beta
Club and played golf. He was
voted "most involved" by his
class and plans to attend col
lege.
Victoria Neisler, daughter
of Chad and Tonia Neisler, was
on the literary, cross coun
try and basketball cheerlead
ing squads, was active in
FBLA and FCCLA, Horizons,
Student Council and Youth
Apprenticeship. She is a mem
ber of two community theater
groups and will attend Young
Harris College.
Lauren Mize Elected President Of Engineering Society At Tech
Lauren Mize, a fourth year
Civil and Environmental
Engineering major at Georgia
Tech, has been elected as
President of the Student
Chapter of the American
Society of Civil Engineers.
She is a graduate of
Commerce High School.
The ASCE is the oldest
national engineering soci
ety and exists to provide
opportunities for the pro
fessional development of its
members through weekly
meetings with professionals
who give presentations to
student members in hopes
of recruiting potential
employees.
ASCE also participates in
events throughout the com
munity that use civil engi
neering skills for the bet
terment of society, includ
ing sponsoring time and

for Humanity. GT ASCE par
ticipates in the Carolina's
Conference, which is an
annual conference that fea
tures competitions designed
to test the members' knowl
edge of civil engineering
principles. In 2008 Georgia
Tech placed first in the
regional steel bridge com
petition.
Mize and other team mem
bers will travel to Gainesville,
FL, at the end of May for
the national competition
against other institutions in
the U.S. and Canada.
