New pastor to begin August 3
The Commerce Presbyterian
Church has called the
Reverend Richard Montgomery
“Monty” Nelson as its new pas
tor.
Nelson is no stranger to
the Commerce community.
His father, the Rev. Raymond
Nelson, was pastor for the
Commerce Presbyterian
Church from June 1958 - July
1963. The Rev. Nelson will move
to Commerce from Aurora,
Nebraska, where he served as
pastor for two churches, and
will begin Sunday, August 3.
The Rev. Nelson graduated
from Presbyterian College,
attended Memphis Theological
Seminary, received his mas
ter’s degree from Columbia
Seminary and attended the
University of Georgia. He met
his wife, Penny, while his par
ents pastored the Presbyterian
Church in Swainsboro. Penny
received a bachelor’s and mas
ter’s degrees in education from
Georgia Southern University.
The Rev. Nelson’s first pas
torate was in McDonough,
where he received his ordina
tion. He then received a call
from an international church
in Kinshasa, Zaire, Africa, now
known as DRC - Democratic
Republic of Congo. Upon
returning to Georgia, Nelson
served as a chaplain in the
Emory University system.
The Rev. Nelson then served
a small church in Carrollton
while training for pastoral
counseling.
“We could not be more excit
ed or happy to find ourselves
in Commerce, Georgia.” stated
the Rev. Nelson.
The Commerce Presbyterian
Church holds worship service
on Sundays at 11 a.m. and is
located at a triangle formed by
University Drive and Lakeview
Drive on Jefferson Road. For

Gospel Singing
To Be Held Aug. 2
Community Chapel Church
will host a gospel singing and
supper Saturday, August 2, at 6
p.m.
Several music groups will per
form.
A cake auction will be held and
the “Sons of Thunder” motorcy
cle group will be selling hotdogs
and $6 chicken plates.
All proceeds will go to Brian
Plavcan, to help cover costs
associated with his Lou Gehrig’s
disease, a progressive neurode-
generative disease that affects
nerve cells in the brain and spi
nal cord.

Youth Program
To Be Held Soon
Commerce First United
Methodist Church’s youth min
istry will host a youth program
titled “Focus on Jesus 2008,”
Friday through Sunday, August
15 - 17, in the evening.
There will be food, music, mes
sage, events and a dinner.
The band “2 West” will perform
and lead singing.
Every evening will conclude
with a message.
The event will be open to all
area youth.
