Commerce
Hart County native Christy
Green has been painting and
drawing all of her life, she says,
and the results are easily recog
nizable in the one-woman show
which opened at the Commerce
Public Library this week.
Green’s landscapes pour color
into the library’s meeting room.
Her sunrise, sunset and moonlight
depictions of Lake Hartwell will
be both familiar and astonishing
to those who have spent time
on the lake. A 30-year veteran of
teaching art in her county’s public
schools, mainly on the high-school
level, Green is also the daughter
of an artist who painted in oils
and pastels. She studied art and
art education at the University
of Georgia, and now that she’s
retired, has “a little more time” to
devote to her work.
Christy Green’s landscapes, por
traits and florals will be on view at
the library throughout August.
Work Day Ahead
In keeping with what has become
an annual tradition, the library will
be closed all day Friday, Aug. 8,
while the staff works on transition

Library Unveils New Art Exhibit
back to school,” says children’s
librarian Catherine Harris. “That’s
our signal that it’s time to shift
focus. We start working on our
summer children’s programs in
January, believe it or not, and we
don’t give out the last reading
achievement award until the day
before school starts in August.
So now we have to turn things
around and get ready for fall and
winter.”
Harris acknowledges that it
won’t take the library staff all day
to put the spring and summer
things away.
“We always have other big proj
ects that we can’t tackle while
the public is in the building,” says
library director Susan Harper, “not
to mention some major cleaning
and fixing and straightening. We
always plan on a bit more than
we can actually finish, but we do
get most of it done, and that’s
rewarding.”
No books are due back at the
Commerce library Aug. 8, but all
books that are returned will be
checked in on time, Harper says.
The library will reopen Saturday,
Aug. 9, at 10 a.m.
