Evelyn Demarest, 72, of
Springdale, AR, formerly of
Commerce, died Friday, Aug. 1,
2008.
She was born June 18, 1936, in
Jackson, the daughter of the late
Bill and Clara Howington Archer.
She was retired from food ser
vice.
Survivors include sons, Chris
Demarest, Springdale, AR, Scott
Demarest, Jackson, MS, and
Richard Demarest, Little Rock,
AR; daughters, Donna Henry,
Bryan, AR, and Retta Harrison,
Springfield, AL; brother, Jerry
Archer, Commerce; sister, Betty
Jean Ayers, Homer; 12 grand
children; and three great-grand
children.
Graveside services were held
Tuesday, Aug. 5, at Grey Hill
Cemetery with the Rev. David
Fitzpatrick officiating.

jack Gray
Jack L. Gray, 70, of Hammond,
IN, died Monday, July 21, 2008,
following a heart attack.
He was born Feb. 24, 1938,
in Tennessee, moving to Indiana
in his teenage years. He was a
retired construction contractor
and served as an honor guard in
the United States Army under
the Eisenhower administration.
Survivors include his wife,

Sylvia Cochran
Sylvia Minish Cochran, 53, of
Jefferson, died Friday, Aug. 1,
2008, at her residence following
an extended illness.
Survivors include her husband,
Doug Cochran, Jefferson; a
son, Rex Douglas Cochran Jr„
Lawrenceville; daughters, Leslie
Jennifer Cochran, Jefferson, and
Angela Nicole Cochran, Hull;
brothers, Ernest Minish and
Leon Minish, both of Commerce;
sisters, Mary Jane Cadell,
Commerce, Helen Adams, Hull,
Naomi Denton, Charlotte, NC,
June Bellew, Nicholson; and two
grandchildren. She was preceded
in death by two sisters, Jeanette
Ford and Shirley Lackey.

Monday, Aug. 4, in the chapel of
Ivie Funeral Home, Burial was in
Minish Cemetery.

'JW' Patman
J.W. Patman Sr. “JW”, 85, died
Sunday, Aug. 3,2008, at St. Mary’s
Hospice in Athens.
Born in Jackson County on
April 7, 1923, he was the son
of the late Milledge and Senie
Patman. He was a lifelong mem
ber of Flats Creek Baptist Church,
where he served as a Deacon for
many years, and loved the Lord.
He attended Athens Technical
College and worked at Athens
Regional Hospital until retire
ment in 1996, in the plastering
and sheetrock trade. He was pre
ceded in death by a son, Eugene
(Betty) Wood.
Survivors include his wife of
62 years, Wilda “Boots” Patman;
children, Martha (Dr. Grady)
Cornish, Brenda Harper, Randy
Patman, all of Athens, J.W.
(Tommy) Patman Jr., Detroit, MI,
Carol (the Rev. Oland) Tarpkins,
Commerce.

Cody Gowder
Joseph Cody
Gowder, 16,
of Alto, died
Saturday, Aug.
2, 2008.
Born in Hall
County, he
was the son
of Joe Keith
Gowder of Alto
and Tammy Irvin Gowder of
Atlanta. He was a member of
Charity Baptist Church and the
Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
He played varsity football and
baseball at Banks County High
School.
Survivors in addition to his
parents, include a sister, Ashley
Gowder, Athens; grandparents,
Bill and Edna Gowder, Maysville,
Dennis and Gail Irvin, Homer;
great-grandmother, Bonnie May
Gowder, Maysville; two uncles;
one aunt; and six cousins.
Funeral services were held
Monday, August 4, at Grove Level
Baptist Church with the Revs.

Arthur McGinnis
Arthur Hoyt McGinnis, 90, of
Nicholson, died Tuesday, July 29,
2008, at Fite Living Center in
Cartersville.
Born in Jackson County, he was
the son of the late Dossie L. and
Mae White McGinnis. He was
preceded in death by his wife,
Rilla Fortson McGinnis; and a
son, Larry McGinnis.
Survivors include a son and
daughter-in-law, Keith and Linda
McGinnis, Nicholson; daugh
ter and son-in-law, Rebecca and
Greg Vincent, Adairsville; grand
children, Corey Vincent, Tori
McGinnis, and Mikki McGinnis;
several nieces and nephews; and
great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held
Friday, Aug. 1, at Cabin Creek
Baptist Church with the Rev. Troy
Herbert officiating. Burial was in
the church cemetery.

James King
James Edwin King, 67, of
Royston, died Friday, Aug. 1,
2008, at the Cobb Memorial
Hospital in Royston.
He was born in Franklin County
April 12, 1941, the son of the late
James Fred and Mary Elizabeth
Haynes King. He was a supervi
sor, having worked with Royston
Corporation, and was Baptist.
He was preceded in death by a
brother, Jerry King.
Survivors include his wife,
Janice Phillips-King, Royston; a
son, Nelson King, Atlanta; daugh
ter, Rebecca Cannon, Commerce;
stepdaughters, Tammy Hart and
Tina Phillips, both of Royston;
brother, Bill King, Royston; one
grandson; and two great-grand
children.
Funeral services were held
Monday, Aug. 4, in the chapel of
Pruitt Funeral Home with the Rev.
Bert Synan officiating. Burial was
in the Cary Memorial Gardens.

'Jerrie' Gravitt
Lilia Jeraldine “Jerrie” Gravitt,
67, of Carnesville, died Tuesday,
July 29, 2008, at Emory University
Hospital, following an extended
illness.
Born in Orange County, FL, she
was the daughter of the late Roy
and Lila Pearl Stripling Taylor.
She was the mother of Donna
and Michael DeLoach and grand
mother of Megan and Matthew
DeLoach, all of Maysville.

Thursday, July 31, in the chapel
of Carter Funeral Home with
Ray Fumea, minister, officiating.
Burial was in Peachtree Memorial
Park in Norcross.

Daniel Bratcher
Daniel Joseph Bratcher, 44, of
Gaffney, SC, died Friday, Aug. 1,
2008, at his residence.
Born at Edwards Air Force
Base in California, he was the
son of Donna Pruitt Bratcher of
Nicholson, and the late Donald
Bratcher. He was employed in
construction and was Baptist.
Survivors in addition to his
mother, include his wife, Alice
Martin Bratcher; daughters,
Jessica Bratcher, Martin, and
Abbey Bratcher, Gaffney, SC;

Access to the photos catalogue is available from a button
on the newspapers’ individual websites (CommerceNewsTODAY.
com, JacksonHeraldTODAY.com, MadisonJournalTODAY.com,
BanksNewsTODAY.com and BraseltonNewsTODAY.com).
There will be approximately a one-week lag time between the time
photos are published and their availability at the online site.
Those who don’t have Internet access in their homes may visit area
public libraries that offer the service.
Humane Society Sets Fund-Raiser
The Humane Society of Jackson County will host Mimosas for
Mutts, its annual fall fund-raiser, Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Jefferson
Civic Center. The event features a catered brunch, a silent auction
and entertainment. Fashions will be presented by Coldwater Creek
of Athens. Live music will include a harpist and a pianist.
This is the organization’s third year presenting Mimosas for Mutts,
which raises funds to help rescue animals and work toward a future
facility.
Tickets for the morning’s event are $25 per person, or tables of
eight for $160. In addition, the Humane Society is still accepting
sponsorships and welcomes donations of silent auction and door
prize items.

Humane Society Has A Web Site
The Humane Society of Jackson County has announced that its
web site is now up and running. The address is www.hscj.com.
“I would love to get your feedback and comments,” said society pres
ident Angela Gosnell. “We want the site to be the best of the best.”
Courthouse Replicas Being Offered
The Jackson County Historical Society will have limited edition
architectural replicas of the historic courthouse available for $15
each at Art in the Park Sept. 20-21 at Hurricane Shoals Park and at
the Holiday Market in Jefferson Nov. 8.
They are also available by contacting Charlotte Mealor at
706-757-2471. Proceeds will go toward the restoration of the historic
courthouse. The wooden replica is made by Brandywine Collectibles
in Yorktown, VA, and is approximately 7.5 inches wide, 5.5 inches
tall and .75 inches thick. The reverse of the replica includes informa
tion about the 1879 building and its design.
Courthouse Information Sought
The Jackson County historic courthouse committee is looking for
photos of the historic courthouse and any original furnishings that
could be placed in the building after it is restored.
“The committee is looking for old photographs of the outside or
inside of the historic courthouse,” committee chairman Charlotte
Mealor said. “And if you have been given any of the old furniture,
signage or fixtures, we would greatly appreciate your gifts of these
items back to the county for use and/or display when the restora
tion work is completed.”

Athens Chorale Plans Auditions
The Athens Master Chorale will hold auditions for its upcoming
season Thursday, Aug. 14.
There are openings for alto and tenor parts.
