2009 To Be Year of Change At library
Brittany Leighann Mathis To
Marry Matthew Dale May 9
Lynn R and David C.
Mathis of North Augusta, SC,
announce the engagement
and forthcoming marriage
of their daughter, Brittany
Leighann Mathis, to Matthew
Shay Dale of Grovetown, son
of Lisa and Terrence A Dale
of Gillsville.
The couple will be united in
marriage at 5 p.m. Saturday,
May 9, at the First Baptist
Church of Edgefield, SC.
The bride is the granddaugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert T.
Reel, Edgefield, SC; Rachel
Rozar, Dudley, and the late
William A Mathis.
She is a 2004 graduate
of North Augusta (South
Carolina) High School
and a 2008 graduate of the
University of South Carolina
Aiken with a bachelor of sci
ence degree in exercise and
sports science.
Mr. Dale is the grandson
of William Lance, Jefferson,
and the late Gail Chambers
Lance; and the Rev. and Mrs.
Samuel Dale, Gillsville.
He is a 2004 graduate of
Banks County High School
and is a licensed realtor
employed by Meybohm
Realtors.
The Commerce Public
Library, a local institution
for more than 60 years,
looks toward some chang
es in the year ahead. A new
director will be in place
to lead the library into
the second decade of the
twenty-first century and,
presumably, into an expan
sion and renovation of the
library building — the first
such period since 1987.
Also ahead for the library
in the foreseeable future:
a changeover from video
tapes to DVDs, and from
audiocassettes to CDs.
“Also, I would guess that
before too long our patrons
will be able to download
books and music to their
MP3 players," says the cur
rent library director, Susan
Harper. “So instead of
checking out a book or a
CD, they’ll check out the
right to download one."
Harper has seen many
changes during her ten
ure. “We’ve gone from one
electric typewriter to 25
computers," she says, “and
from checking out mate
rials manually (by writ
ing your name on a card)
to scanning barcodes. In
fact," she notes, “we’ve
been through three differ
ent computerized circula
tion systems. The truth is,"
Harper adds, “libraries are
all about change, because
they have to stay current
with what people are doing.
And I look for the next few
years to be an exciting time
for our library."
Writers Group And
Book Vine to Meet
The library’s Writers
Group will hold its regular
monthly meeting Tuesday,
Jan. 6, at 10:30 a.m., and
hopes to see both old-tim
ers and new faces at its
first meeting of the year.
The group, which is now
in its 14th year of regu
lar meetings, has a focus
on autobiographical writ
ing, and several members
are creating books of their
recollections to pass on
to succeeding generations
in their families. However,
they welcome all kinds of
writing, including poetry
and song lyrics, fiction,
nonfiction, science fiction,
short-story writing, plays
and screenwriting.
The Book Vine, the
library’s book group, will
meet Friday, Jan. 16, at
1:30 p.m. to talk about
Myriam Cyr’s “Letters of
a Portuguese Nun," one
side of a passionate cor
respondence that rocked
seventeenth-century
Europe when it was pub
lished in Paris in 1669.
Controversial for more
than three centuries, the
letters are now generally
believed to have been
co-authored by a French
count and the playwright
Jean Racine, but they typi
cally provoke as much dis
cussion now as they did in
the 1600s.
Members and newcom
ers alike are invited to pick
up a copy in the library for
$5 and to come to the Book
Vine meeting Jan. 16 pre
pared to enjoy dessert and
literary conversation.
Will You Volunteer?
Supported not only by
the City of Commerce,
with help from Jackson
County and the State of
Georgia, but also by the
strength of its many vol
unteers, the library is cur
rently in need of a good
shelver or two.
If you know and love
the alphabet, are good at
alphabetizing and filing,
and would like a little exer
cise, you are invited to call
706-335-5946 and speak
with Paige or Catherine
about volunteer opportu
nities.
“Please also consider
joining the Friends of
the Library," says Friends
president Erika Jantzen.
“We support the library
in many different ways —
most of them lots of fun
— and would love to have
you join us." As examples
of volunteer activities,
Jantzen mentions an annu
al book sale, two plant
swaps (spring and fall),
and a volunteer apprecia
tion dinner, as well as the
yearly Bluegrass Country
Christmas.
