Edna Allen
MARTIN - Edna Merle
Adams Allen, 81, died
Wednesday, January 21, 2009,
at her residence.
Born on February 16, 1927,
in Madison County, she was the
daughter of the late O.L. and
Willie Mae Evans Adams. She
was retired from Tugaloo State
Park after 20 years of faithful
service, and was a member of
Poplar Springs Baptist Church.
Mrs. Allen was preceded in
death by her husband, Dorsey
Allen; brother, Herman Adams;
and sister, Sally Irvin.
Survivors include children,
Diane and Eddie Hart, Stanley
Allen, Deborah and Melvin
Powers, and Wayne and Delores
Allen; grandchildren, Melanie
Leonard, Chris Allen, Chad
Hart, Angie Shedd, Kenny
Powers and Larissa Garner;
great-grandchildren, Jessica,
Courtney, Andrew, Grace, Hope,
Christian, Elizabeth, Emma,
Katherine, Brannon, Brian,
Matt and Stacy; two great-great-

Lavonia Chapel of Strickland
Funeral Home with the Rev.

cemetery.

Born in Banks County, he
was the son of the late Charlie
and Carrie Mize Anderson. He
was a member of the Freedom
Baptist Church, and was preced
ed in death by his wife, Rachel
McDonald Anderson.

Jerry Armour
GAINESVILLE - Jerry
Garland Armour, 67, died
Saturday, January, 24, 2009,
at Northeast Georgia Medical
Center, following an extended
illness.
He was the son of the late
J.D. and Louise (Kidd) Armour,
from Hall County, where he
lived all his life. He was co
owner of Esquire Mobile Home
dealership for 25 years. He was
an avid fisherman and hunter
and his grandchildren were the
delight of his life, loved ones
added. He was a member of
Pleasant Union Baptist Church
and attended Riverbend Baptist
Church for approximately the
last 30 years. Mr. Armour was
preceded in death by a brother,
Johnny Armour.
Survivors include his wife,
Kay Armour, Gainesville; sons
and daughters-in-law, Jerry Carl
and Melody Armour, Kerry
Armour, all of Gainesville, Alan
and Tiffany Armour, Auburn;
daughter and son-in-law, Jenna
Kay and Rocky Pridgen, Lula;

Herman Baugh
BIRMINGHAM, ALA. - .
Herman Crawford Baugh, 91,
passed away January 19, 2009,
in Birmingham, Ala., where he
resided since 2001.
He was born November 7,
1917, in Lula, the son of the
late Arthur Herman and Zadie
Church Baugh. After his mother
died in the Flu
Epidemic of
1918, he was
reared by his
grandmother,
Mary A. Cagle Baugh in the
New Holland Community of
Gainesville. Mr. Baugh was
a veteran of the United States
Army Air Force during World
War II and was stationed in
China with The Flying Tigers.
He also served in the Korean
War until he was discharged, at
which time he remained in the
Reserves. After graduation from
the University of Georgia, he
taught in Hall County, Military
Dependants School in Turkey for
two years, and later in Athens,
and Lexington. After retiring
from teaching, he was activated
in the military and served sev
eral years as a chaplain’s assis
tant at several bases. Mr. Baugh
retired as a Sr. Master Sergeant
with 24 years service.
As a civilian, he served as
a deacon and Sunday School
teacher at New Holland, Oconee
Heights and East Athens Baptist
churches. He was a member of
the East Athens Civitan Club
and of the Golden K. Kiwanis
Club in Oxford. He attended
Meadowbrook Baptist Church
in Oxford until he moved to
Birmingham.
He was preceded in death by
a sister, Elsie Baugh; and broth
ers, Elmer, Arthur Jr. and Hoyt
Baugh.
Survivors include his wife,
Rebecca Seagraves Baugh;
sisters, Pauline B. Boddie,
Guntersville, Ala. and Joyce
Hughes, Laurel, Miss.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday, January 21, in the
chapel of Lord & Stephens
Funeral Home with the Revs.

ATHENS - Eddie Lee
Benedict, 88, died Wednesday,
January 21, 2009.
Born in Jackson County, he
was the son of the late Bob
and Clyde Collier Benedict. He
was retired from Thomas Textile
after 46 years of service, and was
connected with Bridges Funeral
Home during World War II.
Survivors include his wife of
62 years, Lula Savage Benedict,
Athens, daughter, Kathy Bell,
Bishop; sons, Mark Benedict,
Nicholson, and Wayman
Benedict, Athens; three grand
children; four great-grandchil
dren; and a number of nieces
and nephews.

Kathleen Burt
GAINESVILLE
Kathleen Miller Burt, 82, died
Wednesday, January 21, 2009,
at Northeast Georgia Medical
Center in Gainesville, following
an extended illness.
Born on February 24, 1926,
in Jackson County, she was the
daughter of the late Fred Miller
and Ola Belle Miller Murphy.
She was a homemaker, member
of St. Paul Methodist Church,
served as a volunteer for the
Northeast Georgia Medical
Center Auxiliary for 21 years,
and was awarded Volunteer of
the Year in 1994. Mrs. Burt was
preceded in death by her hus
band, Frank McCallister Burt.
Survivors include daughters
and sons-in-law, Jan and Steve
Russo, Ballston Lake, N.Y.,
Ellen and Dan Riddle, Leesburg,
and Elizabeth Burt, Chandler,
Ariz.; two grandchildren; and
one great-grandchild.

held Saturday, January 24, at

“Woody" Coffee Jr., 66, died

Coffee. He was a member of
the Mtn. View Baptist Church,

Compton, 87, died Wednesday,
January 21, 2009, surrounded
by his loved ones in the home in
which he was born.
Born in Madison County,
he was the son of the late
Webster G. "Boss" Compton
and Mazelle Lord Compton. He
was preceded in death by his
wife, Bernice Dobbs Compton;
brothers, Rabun Compton,
Rufus Compton; sisters, Glennie
Wood, Grace Threlkeld; daugh
ter-in-law, Rhonda Compton.
He was retired
after 34 years
of service with
Transcontinental Pipeline
Company, was an active lifetime
member of Oak Grove Baptist
Church, and was a veteran, hav
ing served in the United States
Army during World War II. He
was a loving father, grandfather
and great-grandfather, and his
passion was farming the land
on which he grew up as a child,
loved ones stated.

- Charles Daniels, 76, died
Wednesday, January 14, 2009.
A lifelong resident of Jackson
County, he was born on April
30, 1932, the son of Nathaniel
and Blanch Daniels. He was a
member of Jones Chapel Baptist
Church and was employed with
CSX Railroad for 30 years.
Mr. Daniels was preceded in
death by his first wife, Virginia
Brown.
Survivors include his wife,

“Pete" Davis, 68, died Sunday,

2009, at BJC
Medical Center
in Commerce.
Born in Banks County, he was
the son of the late Elmer and
Bobbie Wood Davis. He was
a United States Army Veteran,
a member of the VFW, and
Masonic Lodge #355 F&AM
Hollingsworth. Mr. Davis was
preceded in death by a brother,
Larry Davis.
Survivors include his wife,

Okel Dawson
DANIELSVILLE - Okel
Dawson,
honored
World War
II Veteran,
died peace
fully in
his sleep
at home in
Danielsville
on Monday,
December
29, 2008, of service related
causes.
He was 90 years old and
happy to spend Christmas
with his wife, Gennis Dawson;
son, Kerry Dawson, daughter,
Marsha Richmond; grandchil
dren, Danielle Nelson, Jared
Dawson and Conor Dawson;
great-grandchildren Skyler,
Dawson and Taylor Nelson;
and a great-grandchild due
next summer to Jared and Carla
(Piazza) Dawson. He was pre
ceded in death by his parents,
Frank and Iva Dawson, as well
as sisters, Virginia Westfall and
Wanda Dawson. He was born
in Upshur County, W. Va. Mr.
Dawson joined the U.S. Navy
in 1939 and served on the air
craft carrier USS Yorktown
helping in supplying wartime
Britain. After Pearl Harbor, he
went to the Pacific on the USS
Cimarron where he was pro
moted to Chief Petty Officer.
Chief Dawson participated in
the Halsey-Doolittle, Wake
Island and Truk Island Raids, as
well as the Guadacanal-Tulagi
Landings, the New Georgia
Occupation and the Battle of
Midway. He also served in the
Gilbert, Marshall, Marianna and
Palau Operations. On May 15,
1996, he was honored at the
Pentagon with a naval citation
for service on the Doolittle Raid
over Tokyo in April of 1942.
After the war, Okel and Gennis
Dawson were married in Ohio
where he began machine work
before the family moved to
Homestead, Fla.
Over more than thirty
years, Mr. Dawson worked at
Homestead Air Force Base,
Aerojet General (space pro
gram), and retired from
International Paper Corporation.
After retirement, he worked part
time for Southern Packaging
until Hurricane Andrew in 1992
caused a move near family in
Watkinsville. Gennis continues
to reside in Danielsville, attend
ing the Danielsville United
Methodist Church, while her
great-grandchildren attend pub
lic schools in Madison County.
Okel and Gennis Dawson
were married for 63 years. He
was a dear father and grand
father, a great friend known
for gentle ways and entertain
ing conversation, and a valued
colleague who will be missed,
loved ones stated.
A memorial service will be
held Sunday, May 24, 2009, at
the Union Methodist Church in
Upshur County, W. Va., with
burial in the adjacent Mount
Union Cemetery.

He was

with 33 years of dedicated ser
vice prior to this at Laurelwood
Hospital in Meridian, Miss. He
was a member of the Wesley
United Methodist Church in
Meridian, Miss., and attended
Hazel Creek Baptist Church in
Mt Airy. He was an avid fisher
man and musician, and was also
a devoted father and grandfa
ther, loved ones added.
