Boyd Evans, 86, died Tuesday,
January 20, 2009.
Born in Barrow County, she
was the daughter of the late
Claude and Mary Jane Perkins
Boyd. She was a member of
Hebron Christian Church,
and was retired from Empire
Manufacturing after 30 years
of service. She was preceded
in death by her husband, Jesse
M. Evans; and sisters, Hortense
Rogers and Marjorie Cronic.
She was a devoted mother,
grandmother and great-grand
mother who loved flowers, gar
dening, and her most loved and
important job was a homemak
er, loving and taking care of her
family, loved ones stated.
Survivors include sons and

Royal Hardegree
WINDER - Royal Wilson
Hardegree, 90, died Sunday,
A native and
lifelong resi
dent of Barrow County, he was
the son of the late Callous and
Nellie Wilson Hardegree. He
was a Marine Corp veteran of
World War II, a member of
Cedar Creek Baptist Church,
where he served as Chairman of
the Board of Deacons for over
26 years, and Sunday School
teacher for over 50 years. Mr.
Hardegree was a retired supervi
sor at Carwood Manufacturing
Company with 47 years of ser
vice. He will be remembered
by all whose lives he touched
as a strong, quiet man with a
quick wit, a firm handshake and
an unfailing love for family,
friends, God and Country, loved
ones stated. Mr. Hardegree was
preceded in death by his wife
of 62 years, Margaret Daniel
Hardegree.
Survivors include a daugh
ter, Sylvia Hardegree; sons
and daughters-in-law, Harris
and Pat Hardegree, Wayne and
Peggy Hardegree, all of Winder;

COLBERT - Giles A. “Guy"
Hart, 94, died Saturday, January
24, 2009, at his residence.
Born on June 18, 1914, in
Madison County, he was the son
of the late Homer C. and Josie
Johnson Hart. He was a mem
ber of Moon’s Grove Baptist
Church, member and past mas
ter of John H. Jones Masonic
Lodge, and was retired from
Transcontinental Pipeline.
Survivors include his son
and daughter-in-law, Jim and
Hazel Hart, Danielsville; daugh
ters and son-in-law, Guynelle
and Rufus McElroy, Hull, and
Linda Rodriques, Colbert; 12
grandchildren; 18 great-grand
children; and three great-great-
grandchildren.

‘Red’ Hitchcock
WINDER - David L. "Red"
Hitchcock Jr., 83, died Tuesday,
January 20, 2009, following a
battle with can
cer.
He was
the son of the
late David L.
and Maude Hays Hitchcock.
He attended the University of
Georgia, earning his specialist
degree in education adminis
tration. During his career he
worked as a teacher and coach
in Walton County, teacher,
coach and principal in the
Jackson County School System,
principal and personnel direc
tor in Gwinnett County, then
superintendent of the Barrow
County School System until his
retirement in 1980. Over his 33
years of service, he was honored
with many awards and accom
plishments to include Georgia
Athletic Association Coach of
the Year 1960-62, Chairman of
the Northeast Georgia CESA
1979-80, Barrow County
Chamber of Commerce Citizen
of the Year, president of Barrow
County Retired Teachers
1984. He was a member of the
Winder First United Methodist
Church and was a veteran, hav
ing served in the United States
Marine Corp during World War
II before entering his career as
an educator. Mr. Hitchcock was
preceded in death by a daughter,
Sara F. Hitchcock.
Survivors include his wife of 61
years, Gloria Gibbs Hitchcock,
Winder; daughter and son-in-
law, Suzanne and Bill Wilson,
Winder; grandchildren, Jennifer
and Drew Moss, Macon, Drew
Hackney, Conyers, Jim Kelley,
Winder; great-granddaughter,
Mary Leonard Moss, Macon;
sisters and brother-in-law, Mary
Lou Ehney, Powder Springs,
Ann Page, Rutledge, Chris and
Walter Bell, Riverdale.

First United Methodist Church

‘Slim’ Holbrooks
MT. AIRY - William Andrew
"Slim" Holbrooks, 84, died
Sunday, January 18, 2009, at his
residence following an extended
illness.
Born in Oconee, S.C., on April
28, 1924, he was the son of the
late Alex Andrew and Minnie
Gertrude Ayers Holbrooks. He
was retired from Habersham
Metal Products and was of
the Baptist denomination. He
was an avid outdoorsman and
enjoyed spending quality time
with his family, especially his
grandchildren and great-grand
children, loved ones stated. Mr.
Holbrooks was preceded in
death by a sister, Ruby Stamey;
brothers, Junior Holbrooks,
Winford Holbrooks; and great-
grandson, Cody Holbrooks.
Survivors include his wife of 61
years, Ellene Smith Holbrooks,
Mt. Airy; daughters and sons-in-
law, Martha and Tommy Taylor,
Dot and Ricky Taylor, all of
Demorest, Margaret and John
Lockman, Mt. Airy, and Lorene
and Cliff Case, Clarkesville; son
and fiance, Lee Holbrooks and
Pam Stone, Mt. Airy; brothers,
Raymond Holbrooks, Baldwin,
and Billy Holbrooks, Demorest;
sister, Mary Ruth Stephens,
Demorest; 12 grandchildren; 11

Fay Holland
ROYSTON - Fay Holland,
96, formerly of Bowersville,
died Thursday, January 22,
2009, at the Cobb Memorial
Hospital in Royston.
Born on October 9, 1912,
she was the daughter of the
late Benjamin M. and Electa
Walters Holland. Miss Holland
was a retired educator with
the Franklin County School
System for 38 years, with 35
years in the Lavonia Elementary
School. She was a member of
the Franklin County Retired
Educator Association, member
of N.R.T.A., and former mem
ber of the Delta Kappa Gamma
Society. She was a member of
the Bowersville Baptist Church,
where she taught Sunday School
and Vacation Bible School for
many years, and was a member
of the W.M.U. She was the last
surviving member of her imme
diate family.
Survivors include nephews,
Ben Johnson, Deland, Tenn.,
Dale Holland, Chapin, S.C.,
and Jack Holland, Grayson;
nieces, Mary Sue Shumolis,
Canton, N.C., Betty H. Jackson,
LaGrange, Jean Keenan, Shelby,
N.C.; and a host of great-nieces
and great-nephews.

Georgia Medical Center follow

Born on March 4, 1938, in
Morgantown, W. Va., he was the
son of Margaret Slider Kisner
and the late John Allen Kisner.
He was retired from Fieldale
Farms and was of the Baptist
denomination. Mr. Kisner was
preceded in death by his wife,

"Ricky” Mason, 48, died
Saturday, January 24, 2009.
Born in Winter Garden, Fla.,
he was the son of Robert Lee
Mason and step-mother, Rachel,

Barnes Mason of Athens. He
was an apartment maintenance
supervisor and member of
Edwards Chapel Baptist Church.
Mr. Mason was preceded in
death by a sister, Martha Lianne
Mason.

Murphy, 63, died Thursday,
January 22, 2009.
Born in Columbus, she was
the daughter of the late Gene
Sanders and Juanita Moon
Pope. She had worked as a lab
technician at George H. Lanier
Hospital and at Lab Corp, and
was a manager at Smith Kline.
Survivors include her hus
band, Doug Murphy, Winder;
daughters, Angela Hayes,
Gainesville, Rhonda Meadows,
DeVille, Ala., Melissa White,
Roswell, and Tandi Murphy
Hall, Athens, seven grandchil
dren; three great-grandchildren;
and brother, Larry Pope, Valley,
Ala.

Regional Medical Center.
Born in Jackson County,
she was the daughter of the
late John C. and Odessa Poole
Wood. She was a member of

was retired from Blue Bell. Mrs.
Payne was preceded in death
by her husband, John William
Payne.

Center and was an avid bingo
player.

J. Richards, 50, died Tuesday,
January 13, 2009.
A native of Athens, he was
the son of Thomas Edward and
Charlene Ruark Richards of
Athens. He was a graduate of
Clarke Central High School and
earned his bachelor’s degree in
biology at Northland College.
He was the fifth great-grandson
of President Thomas Jefferson.
His name appears on the fam
ily tree wall at Monticello and
in the Collective Papers of
Monticello. He was a member of
the Audubon Society Outward
Bound, where he enjoyed
nature, was an avid bike rider,
kayaker, and skier, and enjoyed
doing research on the internet.
He was the owner of Black
Goose Chimney Sweep.

Bascom Thomas, 92, died

Limestone Heritage Nursing
Home, following an extended
illness.
Born December 12, 1916, in
Hall County, he was the son of
the late Richard and Mary Lee
Thomas. He was a retired textile
employee from
New Holland
Mills, served in
the United States
Army during World War II, and
was of the Baptist denomina
tion. Mr. Thomas was preceded
in death by his wife, Una Bell
Thomas; and son, Ken Thomas.
He was a loving father, grand
father and great-grandfather,
loved ones stated.

‘Jean’ Whitfield
ATHENS - Lillie “Jean"
Whitfield died of heart failure
on Wednesday, January 21,
2009. She had been a resident
of the Heritage Home of Athens
since September 2008.
She was 77 and would have
been 78 in nine days, as her
birth date was January 30, 1931,
in Dougherty, Okla., a daughter
of John Alfred and Ida May
(Smith) Shuler. She was pre
ceded in death by sisters, Lillie
May Shuler who died in infan
cy, Mary Lynn Hart, and Clara
Reed.
She spent most of her life
living in California. She was
very proud of the fact that after
being a high school drop out, as
an adult, she returned to high
school and obtained her GED
and then received an AA Degree
from Foothill Jr. College in Los
Altos, Calif.
Mrs. Whitfield is survived
by children. Sherry Surra and
her husband, Phil, of Statham,
and Larry Whitfield, and his
wife, Nancy, of Dadeville, Ala.;
grandchildren, Kari, Eric, Jeff,
Russel, Emily, James and Deon;
great-grandchildren, Hayley
Jane and Hannah Grace.; broth
ers John Shuler, Florida, and
Jimmie Shuler, Texas; and a
sister, Helen Robbins, Iowa.
She will be buried in
Dougherty, Okla., next to her
mother, grandmother and great
grandmother.
