Shayla Watson To Marry
Justin Morrow On April 3

ter, Shayla Brittany Watson,
to Justin Dean Morrow,
son of Angie and Mitchell
Morrow of Maysville.
They will be united in mar
riage Friday, April 3. Formal
invitations will be sent.
The bride is the grand
daughter of Edwin and
Elaine Watson, Commerce;
Jacquelyn Swindle,
Nicholson; and the late John
Terry Swindle.
She is a graduate of North
Georgia College and State
University and is pursu
ing a master’s degree in
science education from
the University of Georgia.
She is employed by the
Forsyth County School
System.
The groom is the grand
son of James and Laura
Holder, Bridgeport, AL; and
Howard and Wilma Morrow,
Trenton.
He holds a bachelor
of science degree from
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical
University, where he
majored in aerospace stud
ies and minored in aviation
safety, flight and meteorol
ogy. He is a pilot and a flight
instructor.
Spelling Bee To Benefit Literacy Efforts
The tenth annual Leap
Into Literacy county-wide
Spelling Bee will take place
next Thursday, Feb. 12, at
7:00 p.m. at Jackson EMC,
just outside Jefferson.
Admission is free, and
there are door prizes, a
silent auction and even a
spelling contest for audi
ence members.
This annual celebration
of literacy and love of lan
guage is also a festival of
laughs, as three-person
teams turn out in costumes
and try their best to spell
words most of people can’t
even pronounce.
The proceeds benefit
the Jackson County Adult
Literacy Program — now
in its third decade — and
the Jackson County Work-
Based Learning Programs.

Friends Of Library To
Launch Quarterly Newsletter
The Commerce Friends
of the Library will launch
a quarterly newsletter early
this month, full of library
news and Friends news.
Spearheaded by Friends
president Erika Jantzen, it
will keep members informed
of events, activities, and
issues that involve or affect
the library and its Friends.
“We wanted to do this as
a way to give people a long
view of what’s going on or
coming up at the library,’’
Jantzen says. “We’re think
ing the newsletter will help
people plan their volunteer
involvement and mark their
calendars for events they
want to attend.”
Pajama Storytime
The library’s first Pajama
Storytime will take place
next Thursday evening, Feb.
12, beginning at 6:45.
Parents and caregivers are
invited to bring children in
their pajamas, bathrobes,
slippers, etc. to enjoy an
evening storytime with the
library’s “Miss Catherine.’’
Internet Safety Series Begins Sunday
The First Baptist Church of Commerce will host a series
of “Internet Safety for Parents’’ four Sundays starting Feb.
8, from 5:00 to 6:00 in the fellowship hall.
Topics include:
•Potential Internet Risks and Concerns: sexual related,
social mapping, “grooming,’’ cyberbullying and threats,
scams and dangerous groups and communities.
• Do you really know where online your kids hang out?
MySpace, Facebook, Twitter and other social networking
sites, email chats and instant messages, chat rooms and
online gaming and the chatting involved.
• New technologies and their risks:.
• Parenting and Protection: warning signs, tips for parent
ing kids and computers; and technologies.
There is no charge, but those interested are asked to RSVP
by Friday, Feb. 5, by calling the church at 706-335-4083.

Heath and Alycia Jones of Commerce announce the birth
of a daughter, Chloe Marissa Jones, Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009,
at St. Mary’s Hospital, Athens.
The grandparents are Pam and Major Hunter and Patricia
Shubert and Steven Jones, all of Commerce. The great-
grandparents are Carlton Sears and Ida Bell Sears and
Eunice Deal and Ed Deal, all of Commerce.
Caden Charles Hughes McWilliams
Kiah and Ruth McWilliams of Commerce announce
the birth of a son, Caden Charles Hughes McWilliams,
Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Athens. He
weighed seven pounds, 13 ounces and was 21 inches long.
He joins a brother, Dylan McWilliams.
Grandparents are Charles and Brenda Trammell and
Beth McWilliams and the late Dennis McWilliams, all of
Commerce. The great-grandparents are Eunice Trammell
and Nettie Mae McWilliams, both of Commerce; and
Lurline Storey, Pine Mountain Valley.

Miss Massey earned a
master’s of science degree
in postsecondary educa
tion from Troy University
in 2008, a bachelor of sci
ence degree in special edu
cation from the University
of Georgia in 2007 and
an associate of science
degree in early childhood
at Gainesville College in
2005. She graduated from
Commerce High School in
2003 and is a special educa
tion teacher at Commerce
High School.
The groom is the grand
son of Mr. and Mrs. L.H.
Colquitt, Winder; and Hazel
Sims, Winder, and the late
Maurice Sims.
Mr. Sims earned a mas
ter’s of science degree in
postsecondary educa
tion from Troy University
in 2008 and a bachelor of
science degree in educa
tion and business educa
tion from the University of
Georgia in 2006. He gradu
ated from Winder-Barrow
High School in 2001. He is a
business teacher at Barrow
County Performance
Learning Center and is a
varsity assistant football
coach at Winder-Barrow
High School.
The couple will reside in
Jefferson.

understand that the words "I quit" are not in Courtney's vocabulary when it
comes to rehab. For eight months, she has faced it all without complaint —
muscle re-education, cardio work, core strengthening, muscle strengthening,
orthotic training and gait training — so that she could overcome a vicious
knife attack she suffered while working a night security job.
Some thought she may never walk again. Courtney and Laurie knew better.
