Book Vine Turns
Up the Heat
The Book Vine, the
library’s book-discussion
group, will gather Friday,
Feb. 20, at 12:30 p.m. to
celebrate Ray Bradbury’s
groundbreaking science-
fiction crossover novel,
“Fahrenheit 451," which
explores life in a cul
ture where reading is
outlawed and books are
burned “for the good of
the people."
This famous book
began life as a short
story, “Bright Phoenix,"
published in 1947. It was
expanded into a novella
called “The Fireman" in
1951, and then serialized
in its final form in 1954
and released as a novel. A
1966 film version directed
by Francois Truffaut and
starring Oskar Werner
and Julie Christie was an
instant sensation and has
become a cult classic.
Bradbury wrote the
novel on a rented type
writer in the basement of
the UCLA library, as an
expression, he said, of his
love of books. The title
refers to the temperature
at which books burn.
Book Vine members
and newcomers will meet
at the library over a free
pizza-and-salad lunch, fol
lowed by dessert and dis
cussion of the novel.

Donors Help Library
Buy New Books
“We are so excited," says
Harris as she reviews a list
of children’s books she
plans to order for the chil
dren’s library.
Dismayed by the city’s
spending freeze, library
staffers had feared the
worst: an inability to
purchase new books to
augment those provided
by the state, in a year
when the state’s budget
for books has been drasti
cally cut.
In classic Commerce
fashion, however, gener
ous donors have come to
the rescue. A donation
from a generous couple
provided funds that car
ried the library through
December. And January
donations from the Study
Club and the Cold Sassy
Quilters — along with a
private donation for non
fiction titles — “should get
us from here to spring,"
says library director Susan
Harper. “There’s no way to
say how grateful we are,"
she adds.
Ideas for the spring-to-
summer season include
donations in honor or
in memory of someone,
with particular titles or
kinds of titles in mind;
“birthday books" to honor
someone on their special
day; “and anything else
you can think of," Harper
says. “We’re doing a lot of
brainstorming these days,
and you’re welcome to
join in."
