Budget-Cutting Proposals Would
Take Big Bucks From School System
By Angela Gary
Two legislative proposals
making their way around
the state capitol could, if
enacted as drawn, cut prop
erty revenues to local gov
ernments by $3.7 million.
The biggest proposal is
the governor’s plan to elimi
nate the state “homeowners
tax relief grant’’ which is,
in effect, a state rebate to
local governments. If those
funds are cut from the state
budget, it will cut funding
to local governments by $3
million, according to county
officials. Taking the biggest
hit would be the Jackson
County School System,
which is the largest property
taxing agency in the county.
A second proposal making
its way through the Georgia
Legislature to increase the
homestead exemption from
$2,000 to $4,000 would cost
the Jackson County govern
ment $187,418 and the coun
ty school system $310,900.
The change would also
impact Commerce and
Jefferson governments, as
well as their school sys
tems.
Tax commissioner Don
Elrod said the average sav
ings to homesteaded prop
erty of the first proposal
would be $233 a year, an
amount he suggested, that
would have to be billed by
the county.
“Every homesteaded
property would have a tax
increase by that amount,
not counting what millage
rate increase, if any, there
is,’’ Elrod said.
Finance director John
Hulsey presented the num
bers at the Jackson County
Board of Commissioners
meeting Monday night.
He also gave an update on
January finances for the
county, which show that the
revenue is nine percent less
than had been projected for
the month.
Hulsey pointed out that
property taxes are below
budget estimates by $58,000
and other taxes are below
budget by $12,700. Fines
and forfeitures are below
budget $16,650 due to the
State Court fines being 29
percent below budget.

GO EAGLES...There is always a
lot of excitement at the Eagle Gym
during basketball season, but this
go-round is registering new highs
on the “noise-level” meter. Our
Eagle boys team is enjoying a large
measure of success. They are
undefeated in Region 8-A, as they
head toward the region
tournament.
They have been playing great
all season and are fun to watch.
They have been packing out the
1000 seat Eagle gym. Loyal Eagle
fans have provided plenty of
'home-court advantage' cheering.
The boys have worked hard
under the direction of coaches
Ron Link, Mike Cosby, and Tim
Cummings. We wish them a hearty
“Go Eagles", as they move forward.
