spring and summer wres
tling to stay on top of the
game.”
In 2008, East Jackson
placed 19th in state com
petition and had two wres
tlers place. Coach Frank
Caputo pointed to that
improvement, as well as
the improvement the team
made during the season as
indicators of how far the
team has come since its
first year.
“I feel with a few breaks
we could have cracked the
top 10,” he added. “Justin,
Luis and Robbie have all
wrestled big for us this
year, not only in matches,
but in practice as well. We
feel really good about the
guys we have returning
next year.”
Caputo said the team’s
graduating seniors will be
missed very much.
“We had a great bunch of
seniors, who handled them
selves very well. We also
had several new coaches,
including Randy Hill, Steve
Boswell and Earl Larimer.
Any time you have this
kind of change, there is
an adjustment period, but
these kids and coaches
worked very well together
on and off the mat.
“I am certainly very excit
ed for our wrestling pro
gram in the future.”

a slight statistical advantage. Commerce
is 13-12 overall after the region tourney,
and is averaging 53 points per game.
Paideia’s average is 55 points per game.
Bridges believes the Tigers are up to the
challenge.
“These guys are not blessed with the
most talent, but you do not see very many
teams play as hard and as well together
as this one does,” Bridges said. “This
team is one that the city of Commerce
can be very proud of.”
Region Tournament
After ending the regular season on a
58-46 loss to Athens Christian, Commerce
entered into the region tournament the
following Friday against Social Circle.
A three-pointer from Drake Cash
with 15 seconds on the clock pushed
Commerce ahead for a 38-35 win and
into the final four.
Cash led the team with 10 points includ
ing the game winner that came after both
teams stalled offensively late in the
fourth quarter.
Cameron Billings followed with nine
points, while Channing Anderson and
Torrance Wilcher each picked up four. T.
Green, Tyler Gamble and Bubba Bonds
scored three apiece, and Anthony Norris
rounded out the scoring with two.
Moving ahead into the semifinals on
Friday, Commerce faced a rematch with
Athens Christian.
The Athens Christian offense once
again found kinks in the Tigers’ defense
to win the game 66-47.
Green led Commerce with 10, followed
by Cash, Anderson and Billings with
nine apiece. Norris and Wilcher added
four apiece and Bonds picked up two.
In the consolation round for third place,
Commerce beat Lakeview Academy
60-54 to send the Tigers into the play
offs.
Bonds led the offense with 14 points,
followed by Billings with 13, Norris 11
and Green 10. Wilcher added five points
followed by Anderson with three, and
Cash and Brandon Romans contributed
two points each.

- East Jackson Makes State Playoffs
Cont’d from page IB
Riverside Military Academy Eagles
Friday night. The two had met once pre
viously in the season, with East Jackson
taking a decisive victory.
But things didn’t go as well for East
Jackson on this night. Riverside went
up 17-13 after one period then took a
27-15 lead into the half after holding
East Jackson to only two points in the
second quarter.
The Eagles made a run in the third
quarter, cutting the lead to six. Late in
the fourth quarter, East Jackson moved
to within two points, but could get no
closer, as Riverside won 59-57.
Gilbert led East Jackson with 15
points, while Stephens scored 14.
“I do not know if we were happy just
being in but we did not come out and
play East Jackson basketball in the
semi-final against Riverside,” Turner
said. “The second team did a good
job keeping us in the game with their
defense but was unable to muster any
offense against the size of Riverside.”
Riverside beat Union County to win
the region championship.
After a disappointing outing in the
semi-finals, the Eagles came back on
Saturday looking to end the tournament
on a high note, as they faced Union
County in the consolation round.
They came away with a 57-45 victory,
securing third place in the region tour
nament.
Gilbert set a new school record by
scoring 30. Stephens followed with
nine.
“It would have been easy to dwell on
the disappointment of Friday's game
but we talked before the game that
there were things more important than
championships and that one of them
was pride,” Turner said. “Pride in what
we do and how we should do it on a
daily basis. I believed we showed this
on the court Saturday.”
