Snowstorm To Affect Next
Year's County School Calendar
By Kerri Testement
The March 1 winter storm
may lead to changes for
the 2009-2010 school year
calendar for the Jackson
County School System.
The district canceled
classes Monday and
Tuesday, March 2-3, after
areas of Jackson County
received at least five inches
of snow.
That storm left few
options for the school
system to make up miss
ing days in the classroom,
according to officials.
The system will use
a teacher planning day
Friday, March 13, and the
first day of Spring Break
Monday, April 6, as the
snow makeup days.
The Jackson County
Board of Education didn’t
seem to favor the idea of
using one day in Spring
Break as a makeup day.
“It has disrupted a lot of
families of students and
families of employees,’’
superintendent Shannon
Adams told the board.
Now, the board is consid
ering proposals to amend
its recently-adopted 2009-
2010 school calendar to
include additional makeup
days for potential inclem
ent weather.
“I’d like to see those days
moved to later in the year
to minimize the situation
we had this year,’’ Adams
said.
One of the ideas tossed
around at Monday’s board
meeting included mov
ing the designated make
up days from February to
March.
The board also talked
about a proposal that
would include a note about
potential makeup days on
the school calendar.
That note would say that
all vacation, holiday and
teacher planning days
could possibly become
makeup days.
For the remainder of this
school year, the district
only had a teacher plan
ning day Friday, March 13;
Spring Break, from April
6-10; the Memorial Day hol
iday Monday, May 25; and
teacher post-planning days
Tuesday through Thursday,
May 26-28.
The last day of class
for the school system is
Friday, May 22. Jackson
County Comprehensive
High School will hold its
graduation Friday, May
22, while East Jackson
Comprehensive High
School will hold its cer
emony Thursday, May 21.
The school system has
already printed its materi
als for graduation.
