JROTC named region champions
The Jenkins County High
School War Eagle Drill Team
and Color Guard continues to
build a rich history of winning,
capturing the Region Drill
Championship for the second
consecutive year.
Saturday, March 7, at South
East Bulloch High School,
cheered on by Jenkins County
School Superintendent Melissa
Williams, Principal Joey
Kirkland, School Counselor
Ruth Hearn and numerous Drill
Team family members on a very
hot day, Jenkins County reigned
supreme on the drill field win
ning 19 awards followed by
Statesboro with 10, Bryan
County with four, South East
Bulloch and Metter with three
each and Emanuel County with
one. Jenkins County qualified in
every event entered for the State
Drill Team Championships to be
held at Fort Gordon in Augusta
on March 21.
Jenkins County won seven
first-place trophies, including
two overall championship tro
phies of a total four available;
nine second-place awards, and
two third-place finishes. Area 9
for Georgia Army JROTC
Schools is made up of nine local
schools, Bryan County, Metter,
Emanuel County Institute, Jeff
Davis, Jenkins County, Portal,
South East Bulloch, Statesboro
and Swainsboro. Drill competi
tion is “open classification”
meaning little Jenkins County
must take on the giants from all
classifications at State. There
will be thirty-two teams from 10
regions throughout Georgia
competing for State Champion
honors in twenty separate events.
JCHS Eagles baseball wins two
The Jenkins County High
School varsity Eagles won two
games last week.
On March 6, the Eagles de
feated Portal 8-5.
Leading hitters were: Will
Bragg 2-2 2 RBI’s; Aaron
Comstock and Houston Bow
ers both 1-2; Josh Lee 1-2,
Double 1 RBI; Trevor
Weathersby 1-3, Double, 1
RBI; and Dag Gay 1-3, 1 RBI.

strikeouts and only one
walk. Trevor Weathersby came
in to get the win pitching three
strong innings with five
strikeouts and only one
walk. He gave up only one hit
and allowed no runs.
On March 9, the Eagles de
feated East Laurens 8-6.

Knight 1-1; Trevor Weathersby
2-3, 2 RS; Will Bragg 2-3 3
RBI’s with a double; Houston
Bowers 2-4 with a HR and a
double; Will Brinson 2-4 1
RBI; Dag Gay and Aaron Tan

Spencer Clark 1-3

Lady Eagles finish fourth at track meet
The Jenkins County High
School Lady Eagles track team
finished fourth in the track meet
held at Bryan Co. March 7.
“It was an outstanding team
performance for the Lady
Eagles,” said Coach Chuck
Sanders.
Southeast Bulloch and Bryan
County finished first and second,
and South Effingham finished
third. The Lady Eagles defeated
Portal, Savannah Christian and
Savannah Country Day.
Coach Sanders said “We are
getting better and better with
each meet and seem to be gain
ing the experience we need to be
in excellent shape for a run at the
region title in a few weeks.”
Finishing high for the Lady
Eagles was Deondra Lewis, 2 nd
in the Discus and Shot Put.

NOTICE OF AVAILABILITY OF
ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT AND
OPPORTUNITY FOR A PUBLIC HEARING
The Jenkins County Board of Commissioners intends to undertake
improvements at the Jenkins County Airport. The Proposed Action
would include a 1,000 foot extension of the existing runway, the exten
sion of the runway protection zones to accommodate the proposed
extension, the construction of a parallel taxiway and runway safety
areas, the provision of a fueling station, and approximately 60.6 acres
of land acquisition.
An opportunity to review the Environmental Assessment (EA) for the
above described action is hereby afforded to the public. The EA is now
available for review at the County Administrator’s office located at 611
East Winthrope Avenue, Millen, Georgia. The EA is available for
review between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm, Monday through
Friday and will be available for review through April 19, 2009.
An opportunity for a public hearing for the above described action is
hereby afforded to the public. The purpose of the public hearing is to
address the proposed action’s potential economic, social, and environ
mental effects and the project’s consistency with the goals and objec
tives of the affected area’s land use or planning strategy. If a public
hearing is requested, the hearing would be held after April 19, 2009 so
that the Environmental Assessment is available for 30 days prior to the
public hearing.
Anyone interested in this project has up to 15 days from the date of this
notice to request a public hearing. Requests for a public hearing should
