All Of Us Are Vulnerable
It is worth noticing that human beings are incredibly vulnerable. Think of how help
less we are at birth, and how many times in the course of our lives we need help
from others, finally ending up in old age as vulnerable as were at birth. While most
animals have protective coverings or markings which camouflage them, or other
abilities which make them less vulnerable, we are relatively weak and unprotected.
Our individual vulnerabilities make it vitally important that we rely on the help and
protection of others. To paraphrase Aristotle, only a god or a beast could live com
pletely apart from others. No person should try to “go it alone” in life, and the
sooner we realize how vulnerable we are, the more willing we will be to help others,
and in due course, to ask others for help. When we contemplate our many individ
ual and collective weaknesses, we are likely to feel even more vulnerable and inse
cure. But alas, there is something true and good about this. That is, the recognition
that we are imperfect and fallible should incline us to be kinder and more forgiving
of the sins and weaknesses of others. This realization of our vulnerability is the
social cement which holds us all together.
The Lord will give strength to His people; the Lord will bless His people with peace. New KJ.V. Psalm 29:11
