Opinions, yours and ours
The Chatter Box
By Deborah Bennett
I received a nice phone call from Bubba Rountree last week. It
is always good to hear from former residents who still feel linked
to their home community through contact with family, friends,
weekly delivery of The Millen News and memories that the years
cannot erase.
After talking with Bubba about his memories of his family’s
business, my thoughts turned to the old Millen News building and
the wonderful renovations and repairs that Harold Moore has made
to the structure. Frank Edenfield would be pleased if he could only
see it now.
I spent almost 30 years in that building and can still see Frank
talking on the telephone in his office with his heels propped on his
desk; Audrey Edenfield at the front desk; Shot Wallace sitting at
his light table in the back comer next to the vault; John Foreman
standing at the folding machine; Lynn Burke doing a “paste up” of
the weekly IGA grocery ad; Gordon Sasser pacing back and forth
at the press; and my husband Wayne on bended knees working on
it.
Yes, time changes everything, but it is still nice to stroll down
Memory Lane occasionally. It was great talking with you, Bubba!
Our poll question on the website last week was, “Do you be
lieve our nation is headed toward an economic depression?
Responses, as of Monday morning, were: Yes - 31; No - 4; and
Undecided - 0.

Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor,
We would like to thank
Deborah Bennett and The Millen
News for responding to Bubba’s
request on Jan. 31 to have a
photo taken of the demolition of
the Edenfield Feed and Seed
store. It was hoped that this pic
ture would inform the readers of
a landmark business that was
being tom down. Not only did
this building serve well the dairy
and farming community, but
also served the fine citizens of
Millen, Jenkins County and the
suburbs of Perkins.
It is with fond memories that
we recount the place where our
parents introduced us to the busi
ness world. Learning how to
count change back to a customer
and saying “thank you and come
again” was our first lesson in
showing appreciation to our cus
tomers.
We recall the daily visits by J.
M. Johnson, J.T. Avert, Johnny
Edenfield and Clyde Dekle to the
store and how they would sit and
tell their stories, the afternoon
stop for a Coke by Woodrow
Wilson before he continued on
his way to complete his mail
route and the hustle of spring-

time and the busy planting
season. But our favorite time of
the year was Christmas and the
selling of Christmas trees. We
remember how our dad would
drill and place limbs in the trees
for customers to make their per
fect tree.
But nothing can last forever,
and now age and time has taken
the building. It is a comfort to
our mother to know that the
building that her father built 63
years ago is generating a dona
tion to a very worthy cause. We
also know that our dad would
have been proud of this contri
bution. Of course, all of this was
made possible by the kind gen
erosity of the new owners.
So to all the customers and
friends that passed through that
door, we hold you dear as a piece
of our history and thank you for
making all those special mo
ments.
And last but not least, thanks
again to The Millen News. From
our viewpoint... .it was an A+job.
