The day didn’t start out like
any other for Jenkins County
High School (JCHS) students
April 16. as they witnessed a
mock car crash and heard speak
ers with a tragic story to tell.
The mock car crash, Ghost
Out 2009, was to prepare stu
dents for their prom night Sat
urday, April 18. It was con
ducted to reinforce to them the
dangers of mixing alcohol with
driving.
The exercise, which ran from
9 to 9:45 a.m. was open to the
community and was attended by
all JCHS students. The program
recounted details of what is in
volved in an alcohol-related
crash.
The scene was realistic, com
plete with police, emergency re
sponders, wrecked cars, a drunk
driver and even fatalities.
Narrators, Lavonte Lovette
and Whitley Clark, described to
students the real life crash de
picted and the unraveling of
events afterward. The narration
included medical personnel ap
pearing at the car crash scene.
The following students partici
pated in the dramatization:
Walter Ivey, Jessica Head, Anna
Gainey, Mary Alice Becton and
Jonathan McBride.
The mock car crash pro
ceeded through the critical min
utes it takes for the victims and
perpetrator to get aid. As stu
dents looked on, they saw their
friends injured and sent to the
hospital in ambulances, one stu
dent extracted with the jaws of
life and one student transported
in the Air Med helicopter from
Doctors Hospital in Augusta.
But the most dramatic event was
students observing the lifeless
body of a classmate being pulled
from the wreckage and a white
sheet placed over the body.
Deyson George, JCHS stu
dent stated, “If it wasn’t real
before this, it is now. It was
helpful to see what the result of
drinking and driving can be first
