Mr. Pickett—\\ hit do you

Mr. Puck, somewhat embar
raseed at being embraced in
such a manner, hardly gets his
breath. But he ventures to say
‘•there’ll be lots of ’em in the
field. We’re going to cleat the
man that won't vote with Iho
republicans to take the duty oil
of jute.”
The Grady monument fund

York. It is a literary produc
tion and confainsa large amount
of choice reading.
The holidays of last week
were marked for riots and mur
ders in several towns. In Je
sup a number of whites and
blacks were killed. The mili
tary had to bo called out. Un
der its blind protection the jail
was mobbed and two negroes
killed in their cells.
In Clarksville, Tenn,, a riot
took place bjtween the police
and negroes. Several negroes
were killed and one or two po
licemen wounded.
The race color, no doubt, was
Ilia outbreak in the above.

Washington, Dec. 15.—1 t I
must tell yon the truth, the
Washington Inauguration Cen

last week were extremely tedi
ous, not to say tame. The gath

the music and Chief Justice
Fuller's oration very satisfacto

was only by card and cards e?s
i!y obtained. Generally in
Washington a free show is well
attended, but, there were hun
dreds of vacant seats in the gal
leries during fho ceremonies.
Among the ladies present were
ill:-, and Miss Biaine, but the

owing to the death of Mrs. Lord,
Mrs. Harrison’s sister.

governors were merely repre
sented by proxies, this was of
no particular moment, though
! the real llesh and blood gover
nors like liov. Fitzhugh Lee of
Yirginia, felt badly put out, and
were not afraid to say so.
Mr. Nichols o f the force of die
departing officers, painfully dis
tinguished himself. It was his
duty to announce the guests.
For a time he got along very
well, save an occasional slip
that brought a titter from the
galleries. But toward the last
he went all to pieces, and read
inglrom the paper lie held “the
Venezuelan Commission,” he
made four or five feeble stag
gers and finally, in sheerdesper
alion, blurted out “the Venuy
zeelean Commission,” to the
immense edification of the gal
lery. The speaker did not even
attempt to check the laughter
that iollowed.
As usual on such occasions,
where fherais no dignity in Ihe
proceedings and small interest
in the subject, one-half uncon
sciously takes note of small
things. I was struck with the
intense pallorol Pres. Harrison
and Secretary Blaine; Mr.
Blaine’s pallor was extreme,
and neither looked like a well
man. When the Vice-Presi
dent and the Senafe came in,
they were all dressed in decor
ous black except Sen. Quay who
wore a suit of ugly, obtrusive
brown that seemed to swear at
every other suit in the crowd.
Jusfice Lamar attracted much af
tention, as it has been expected
that he would be far away at
tendingeeremonies ot a tar dif
ferent character, the services of
sorrow instead of triumph. Thai
Mr. Lamar would have been
glad to be at the side ot Jeffer
son Davis’ bier, no one doubts,
and it is only fair to say that
his sacrifice of personal feeling
to remain at his post of duty in
Washington is to his credit.
The suicide of Francis B. Gow
en, formerly president ot the
Pennsylvania and Heading ral
way, and onoof (ha most prom
inent corporation lawyers in the
United Stales, created mere ex
citement in official circles than
any suicide in Washington in
five years. Mr, Gowen had
been in the city for a week or so
prior to last Saturday, arguing
important cases before the in
ter-state commerce commission.;
He retired Friday night to his j
