he was aroused by a voice which spoke
to bun in a3 cloar, dis.inoS tones as
ever man heard, tabling him to cheer

"How caa I make a fortune?” said
he.
‘You can invent perpetual motion,’

Contest for a Husband.
An edict from the empress ap
peared announcing that vch-hon
na-ta, the daughter of the Manchu
brigadier-genera], Kwei -siang
(youtager brother of the empress,)
had been sekcled asihe consort ol
the youthful emperor of China and
that two girls named Ta-ta-la,
daughters of Chanslmh, a Manchu
vice-president of the Pekin board,
aged 15 and 13 years respectively,
had been chosen for the harem.
The emperor’s marriage will take
place, according to present arrange
ments, on the 23d of next month,
a time which the astronomical
board has ascertained, or at all ev
ents declared, to be propitious.
The process of selecting the em
peror’s consortia interesting. Af
!©r two inspections, at consider
able intervals, the number of candi
dates was reduced to thirty one,
who are daughters of madarins of
above the fourth rank, and, of
course, ci Manchu extraction.
These thirty-ona young ladies
were convej'ed in carlo to the pal
ace on tiie night of the 27th ult.,
or rather in the early morning ci
the 28th, at 2 o’clock. They enter
ed by the ‘-Gate of the Southern
Sea,” which they crossed in boots,
and were conducted to the palace,
which they reached at 3a. m. A
splendid banquet was then spread
before them, after which they were
ushered into the presence of her
majesty, the empress dowager by
groups of four and five. It may b*
of interest to tho ladies to know
that her majesty wore on one occa
sion an ?.picot yellow silk dress,
with a black velvet jacket. Each
girl carried a tablet bearing her
name and ago, also the name of
her father, banner, etc., which was
presonted to theemprass while the
girl stood before her. After some
interrogations, and in no few cases,
even monitory words for having
continued to shavs the forehead,
her majesty formed her opinion of
the candidate, which, wli9n unfav
orable, was signified by handing
the girl’s tablets to one of the eun
uchs with the order to present the
rejected aspirant with a roll of
silk. The girl with the silk was
then taken back to her cart, never
more to participate in the imperial
matrimonial competition.
The selection of anew empress
inflicts a serious burden on many
poor men whose daughters are eli
gible and must bo presented, but
who have little moans to defray
the expenses incidental to journey
ing to I*ekin and frequent visits to
the palace. Most of them pray to
be put out of their misery a; the
first inspection, and thos3 wli® sur
vive t© the last and are then reject
ed are really to be pi fed.
An Indian Legend.
The early Indian tribes who in
nabited Mount Desert believed the
garden of Eden was situated at
that spot, and according to their
legends, when the white man gave
the name of Eden lo one part of
the island, it was only coming fo its
own again. Strange us it may seem
the parimeval father of the Maine
red man was a youth with golden
hair and eyes like the hazel berry,
tall and cf groat beauty. The Eve
who came to him just when his
loneliness was getting unsupport
able, first appeared coming through
tho clouds. Her first exclamation
at seeing him was the Indian for
“Oh, dear!”
She at once cut ofi his golden
locks and began i o weave them in
to a strong cord, growing larger as
she proceeded. At a suggestion
from Mcnicko, the god of evil de
signs, the man took the cord from
her and bound her with it, when
she ceased growing, but did not
stop working. The next thing she
did was to boa i down a tall, green
stalk near her and gather from it
its golden seeds, which she made
into bread, being thus the discover
er of Indian com. The couple, af
ter teaching their children how to
raise and use this grain, were trans
lsted to the constellation of the
j stars known as the Sickle, whence
they watch ovor tbe>r ear hiy heme.
It is thi lan step that costs.
