Vbout tlio Duel—The Alabama
Papers Make a Sharp Criticism.
From the Huntsville Mercury:—
Reporters and their dispatches to
the press have done the best they
could to make a farce out of this
affair. But it certainly eamo very
near h tragedy. Nothing prevent
ed such a result but the magnani
niity of Mr, 4'atlick Calhoun to
wards his opponent, Mr. William
son.
The extraordinary arrangement,
proposed by Mr. .lack King of
dome. CD., and protested against
by Mr. Henry Jackson of Atlanta,
but finally acquesced in, Mr. Wil
liamson, after the word “fire,” fired
ad libitum five times in succession
from bis Smith & Wesson revolver
at Mr. Calhoun. Though reported
a good shot, he failed to hit his ad
versary. Mr. Calhoun fired one
shot and reserved the rest until Mr.
Williamson had exhausted his
weapon and was at the mercy of
his tour remaining balls, to be til
ed at his pleamre.
The code of honor is not respon
sible for the predicament into
which the second of Mr. Willam
son placed his principal, and, that
lie was not killad, is not to the
credit of Mr. King, but is due sole
ly to the cool courage and absence
of vindictiveness on the part of-Mr,
Calhoun.
The code of honor requires sec
ends who are supposed lo he dis
passionate and who are responsible
to the public lor the conduct of
personal affairs, after exhausting
all efforts for an amicable adjust
ment. of difficulties, to agree* upon
‘•terms of meeting,” written and
signed in duplicate, whose prime
qualities are fairness and humani
ty, Blufling and truculence are
mimical lo the spirit and letter of
the usuages of gentlemen and are
outside of the purview and the
func: ice of the code.
Yet it appears, that, in this in
stance, on a point of honor produc
ed by a misunderstanding between
gentlemen and finally adjusted
without, the sacrifice of life or blood
sited, the second of Mr. William
son insisted on an exchange of five
Elliots by each ot the principals be
fore an effort be made to come to
an understanding and arrange the
difficulty.
The proposition may have been
a bluff. It turned out a reckless
expose of the life of his principal—
wholly without n arrant m the code,
