Burned to Death.
A little child of Clinlun Emm
ett's met with a horrible accident
last Friday about 12 m., which re
suited in iis death about 10 p. m.
that night. The little fellow was
a line, vigorous hr beef ten months,
and crawled inlo the fire in Hie ab
sence of its mother and was burn
ed from ihe soles of its feet to Jhw
top of its head almost, the skin be
ing literally burned from tin chest
and abdomen.
Medical aid was summoned as
quick as possible, but the poor lit
tle innocent suffered mortal agony
for near two hours before a physi
cian arrived and administered a
hypodermic injection of morphine,
and applied other remedies for its
relief. It then became quiet, but
all that could be done by the phy
sician, kind parents and friends,
only afforded partial relief until
death released it from its agony.
Its funeral and burial took place
from the Baptist church Saturday
evening, Rev. Mr. Duncan offieiat
ing.
A number of distills have started

Now and then the bloated gauger
passes through here with a nose as
red as a coal of tire. A moral gov
eminent, indeed, he represents;
but it is Hie laws of the country far
man to violate them, and the gaug
er is their representative of de
fense in collecting the revenue.
When wo hear of the government
making a big appropriation ©{ thou
sands of dollars to build a monu
ment to the nation's president and
sidesmen, we think ©t the whis
key revenue, wo think of the de
serled homes and untimely graves
that mark this broad land annual
ly in the face oi the laws of civiliz
ation, Christianity religion and ed
ucation—all asking for protection
trom a seemingly careless and un
godly people! Is there not reason
that the penitentiaries are full,
murders are committed and hang
ings take place every week? The
very 1 tw that executes the murders’
death on the gallows, set the trap
to put two-thirds of their necks in
the Eoosa and launch them into
eternity, from a life of darkness
that might hava been spent in a pro
longed existence of sunshine and
grayhead*! The laws of the land
in protecting are an imposition and
a gr@ss insult (if not waring)
against civilization, Christianity,
religion, education, peace and pros
perity. You may elect your men
and till your representative halls
with the ablest talent the world af
fords, but on the whiskey traffic
they are drones in suppressing its
evil.
