open. By noon the line extended a
mile to the west of the abbey in closely
packed ranks. A small army of po
lice was called out to keep order. The
people passed through the turnstiles
at tlie rate of 2.300 an hour. Al
though thousands were turned away,
giving up hope of entering, the line
was still growing up to the middle of
the afternoon.
