We are notified by letter from
Mr. William Griggs, of Jackson Parish,
La., of the death of Mrs. Lucinda
Carroll, formerly of this county. She
died on the 16th inst. of dropsy of the
heart.
The rats in this office succeed
ed last Saturday night in destroying a
full set of our job rollers. We made a
blow' recently about being prolfagainst
cold weather. We didn’t consider the
rat question and feel the need of some
thing to thaw them out.
Died. —On Friday night, the
24th inst., Mrs. Nancy S. Lyle, in the
Stall year ot her age. She had been a
resident of this county for many years.
We are in receipt of a commu
intention advising ns that we, of the
Fiei.li a .\i> Fireside, have been elected
honorary members of the Mount Zion
Literary Society. Wc return thanks
for the compliment and will endeavor
to show our appreciation by taking fur
ther interest in the advancement of the
Society.
While Col. and Mrs. J.D. Wad
dell were returning from Col. Atkin- 1
son’s last Wednesday night, the buggy
struck a log, which seems to have been
placed across the road by some mali
cious person, and was tilted in such a
Violent manner as to throw Mrs. W.,
to the ground, severely bruising her
body and dislocating her rigid arm.
The scoundrel that put up this job
deserves nothing short of a lengthy j
sentence.
Messts. Nichols and Smith with
their exeelent drays will he found day I
and night at all the train*. They will
also do plowing and hauling. Order*
left at the residence of Dr. Nichols will
meet with quick response.
We would call attention to the
card of Dr. A. Reynolds, Jr., in this
issue, setting forth the many facilities
he has for executing work at short no
tice and in a satisfactory manner. We
would commend Dr. Reynolds to our
readers as a young man of sufficient ex
perience and in every way worthy of
a liberal patronage.

of ’7B he. completed a course of study un
der Mr. Albert Guccry of Atlanta, and
has since produced the work above des
cribed. Jfc has certainly struck his
talent and will succeed if there is any
thing in grit.

A COUPLE OF THIEVES. —Last
1 htirsday night two negroes broke open
the store of Mr. Moss in Cox’s district
ami despoiled the contents to the extent
of a few sacks full of drygoods and gro
ceries. After tliis exploit they went on
their way rejoicing and in the course of
their travels crossed the Powder
Springs road near the residence of Mr.
A. J. Cilery, where, finding tlieir
pelf rather burdensome they halted to
rest and devise means of accelerating
their movements. It seems that an ad
mirable plan was conceived, for day
light, found them several miles from
tlie scene of action and Mr. Chaney’s
stable minus two horses. They were
followed by Mr. Moss, wliosucceded in
capturing the lay-out, horses and all.
The purloined goods now occupy their
former positions on the shelves in Mr.
Moss’s store, the horses as of old
leisurely munch their corn in Mr. Che
ney’s stable, while the sable captives
adorn apartments in the Stephens Hotel,

The farmers round about here
have begun work on their farms,
plowing and cleaning out fence
corners in a farmer-like manner.
The only excitement we have
among us is about the high price
of commercial fertilizers, and the
farmers are calling meetings at
every suitable place in neighbor
hoods and signing pledges not to
purchase a pound over a certain
price, also fixing the price on the
cotton to pay for the same. They
feel that they have been extor
tioned oil by monopolies long e
nough, and are determined to
have a say so in prices hereafter.
Many of our farmers are compos
ting stable manure and cotton
seed, and say they will plant less
and sweeten the soil with home
spun.
Col. W. P. Ward has about fin

starting his steam saw, wheat and
