OUR NEW YORK LETTER.
Nkw York. May 2d. 187 b.
'May day this year was not much
•given over to vernal warmth and sea
sonable flowers. In fact it may be said
to have been /’avernally void and blus
tering. It was therefore marked by a
g®od deal of’>oo horse-pow er language
from those young parties who had pre
maturely pawned their ulsters, as well
as from the numerous heads of families
who spent their waking hours in load
ing and unloading their household ef
fect*, and follow iug the latter diuner
tless through the streets. Those cold
blooded wretches who deal in statistics
inform u* that there was less moving
in the city this year than for several
years previous; hut there was certainly
enough of if visible to satisfy the most
cynical hater of his species, it wn* a
sad occasion. It: always os-a sad occa
sion. Neman likes, in theiirst place, to
have to turn the whole contents of bis
house into the street for public inspec
tion. Almost everybody has some dc-
sire to keep up appearances, au<l to
tacitly ignore, in the presence of stran
gers or even of friend', the existence of
many imiespensible adjuncts of house
keeping. To feel, therefore, that you
are watered by your neighbors ami the
general public while you drag down
.(he from steps and up into the express
wagon the rag carpet from the servant’s
room, a lot of dilapidated old be.ldiug.
a small ear load of rubbish from (he
.attic, all the. pots ami kettles from the
kitchen,am! a, terribly miscellaneous as
sortment of crockery in various states
of repair—all this. I say, constitutes an
.ordeal which w ill almost'.start the cold
perspiration on a book agent.
Of course, in as big a. town as this,
people are too busy to pay much atten
tion to such scenes: but it is useless to
urge this upon the sensitive household
er. lie feels that the eves of the world
are upon him and his crockery, and lie
suffers accordingly. And then this is
only the beginning of trouble. The
same anguish of spirit is repeated at
the other end of the route, its poignancy
increased by the threc-legednessof fur
niture ami fragmentary condition of
glassware which usually insinuate
themselves into a load during even the
briefest journey. Then comes the sooth
ing process of settling will) t.woor three
husky and spirituous truckmen, whose
memory totally fails them a.- to any
previous bargain, and who sturdily’
demand from $lO to per load for
your chattels. Hut why pui
sne tilts painful subject further? Can
not every American citizen or voting
age look back into bis own experience
and sufficiently HU hi the details?
Ihursdav,* however was dedicated
•not alone to the slow transit above re
ferred to, but to rapid transit; as well.
On the evening of that day Air. t'yrus
\V Kield, President of the\. V. Elevat

MARIETTA. GEORGIA. THURSDAY 31 AY 8. i>7A
: pared on a 'wale worthy of some great
festivity, fhe bills tit 1 fare were on
| gorgeous pieces of silk, and the w ines
were rare and costly. The occasion of
. this grand spread was twofold. It was
intended first to symbolize the general
rejoicing over the long-expected com
promise of riie difficulties bet,w een the
tw o companies arisingout of the inter
ference of their eaG side lines, and
secondly, to celebrate the payment of
the first dividend ever declared b\ the
New York Elevated Hoad. The gene
fat opinion being that the company lias
been coining money ever since its es
tablishment. if is somew hat, surprising
to learn from Mr. Field's speech deliv
} ered at this dinner that the company
lias been in existence for thirteen years
and only now declares its first dividend.
There is every prospect now, however,
thatdividends will follow each other
hereafter in satisfactory succession.
Last week the two roads carried an
| average of nearly 150,000 passengers a
! day, or at the rate of about fifty-six
! millions a year, and their patronage
j steadily increases. The Metropolitan
I Hoad is now pushing the work of ex
tending its lines witli great vigor, em
; ploying some 4,000 laborers. Two
fldrds of this formidable anm struck
i for higher wages one morning this
. week, but as the company already bad
! a pay-roll of some six or seven thousand
dollars a day, they decline to accede to
the demand. The laborers stood out
for about half a day, and then, wisely
convludiug that nine-tenths of a loaf
was belter titan no bread, returned to
work.
Another strike is in progress while 1
\v rile. The ’longshoreman of the North
River, who load and unload most of the
steamers anti, sailing vessel- plying
from this port , came to the conclusion
that they ought, to have live cents an
hour more for work than the. steamship
companies are willing to give, struck
work on Thursday, and to the number
of .‘I,OOO have been standing about the
docks idle but. peaceable ever since.
Neither side seems inclined to yield.
Current, amusements are sufficiently
numerous and varied to merit more, of
a notice ilran I have lime jo give them
this week. Aimecaiid her rollicking
troupe are about to commence a season
of scintillation at the Park Theatre,
that very funny play “Engaged 5 ’ hav
ing been forced reluctantly towithdraw
in her favor. Mute. Alodjeska draws
cultured crowds to the ttiand Opera
House: “l/Assommoir,’’ the latest
Parisian sensation, hold- the boards at;
the Olympic; the standard Tiieaire lias
entered upon its fifth month of the im
morial “Pinafore," which opera is
about to push its conquests even to the
elegantand exclusive stage of Waliaek’s
in miniature shape. A company f
cbiklcen from four to fourteen years of
age. who have been giving the opera
with great success in Philadelphia,
have been engaged by Mr. IVa Hack for
a scries of mat iuees. commeucingoii tin*
nth. Thisengagenieiii promises to be
extremely successful, in spite of the
threats of our local Society for the Pre
ventiou oft ruelty to <'hildrcti i<* inter
fere and stop the performance. In
commenting on this threatened inter
ference. the Wf!d very aptly begs tin*
Society to reflect that a good deal more
harm has probably been done in this
world of ours by awkward people who
have been boil on making it better than
by wicked people w Ilf* hnv set out
seriously to make it worse.
