Pranut*Cfi'<)j>: The peanut crop,
grown to he an important industry in |
sevyrui of the Southern and Western j
States, has proved in Tennessee, for the ‘
first time since 1874 —according to the j
circular of Mellen, Brown Cos., Ciu- !
cinnati—a fairly profitable one for both
proiltioers and dealers in the peanut
trade. The crop for the year ending
September 30, 1878, in this State is put
down at 305,000 bushels and the crop
of 1870 at 400,000. A larger proportion
of white than red nuts is noticeable.
This is attributed to the fact that the j
white nuts realize the best prices. Orh- ;
cr estimate* for 1879 given are: Virgin- j
ia. 800,000 bushel* of good quallitv, and
Wurth O ltd in a 90,000 bushel*'. The
grade*adopted in tie* West are classed
as inferior or * common? prime, choice
ami fancy. Virginia dealer* have three
grades only-common, prime and fancy.
According to the authority already re
ferred to, the crop year will close with
the smallest stock held for years, and
prime new nuts shoirid command a
good price.
