Better Than Hotbed Proceuos.
“Better know ono tiling well than
many indifferently," was the rule by
which the children of the Inst generation
wore trained, while a good education wns
thought to be a growth of years and
careful, patient study, and not to be
forced by the hotbed process now too
much in vogue. It was thought, too,
that no education could bo complete un
less there was first a solid foundation on
which to build, the bottom layer of raid
foundation being a thorough knowledge
of reading, writing and spelling, geog
raphy, arithmetic, history and grammar.
These are honAly accomplishments, but
far more necessary to one’s success in
life as a scholar than a mere smattering
of the higlierbranches and an ambitious
attempt at an essay, which may have in
1 it fino figures of speech, borrowed from
some text book, and classical allusions
taken from tho encyclopaedia, but is still
lamentably at fault so far ns writing and
spelling and grammar are concerned.—
Mary J. Holmes.

"lie Oldest Arm Chair.
Tlie oldest arm chair in tho world is
tlie tin-one of Queen Ilatafu, who
flourished in Egypt 1,000 years B. C. It
is made of ebony nnd is beautifully
carved. It is now ono of the most re
cent treasures of tho British museum,—
Now York Sun.
Kocorcl of Children's Weight.
Mr. Francis Galton, whoso researches
on heredity havo been so interesting nnd
important, started a few years ago a se
ries of inquiries into tho development oi
children in height, weight and strength,
at various ages. Tho troublo is that foi
tho materials ho required to bo of any
use, they must Ira carefully sifted, ana
oven they would, for tho most part, re
main open to considerablo doubt.
Gallon can hardly havo hoped, when
ho iuvited tho British paterfamilias to
send iu tho statistics of a family’s
growth, that in regard to weight that
worthy but usually unscientific character
■would take tho necessary precautions.
Qno can.seo how little the average father
of a family is likely to bo careful in such
matters, when ono observes how carelese
ho is in taking tho record of his own
weight. Ho will tako his weight on ono
of thoso rather questionable nickel ma
chines, and remark with a satisfied smile
that he has increased four or five pounds
in weight; without noticing that, per
haps, his last weighing was taken jus*
before a meal on a warm day, when he
was lightly dad, whereas the now weigh
ing has been taken Boon after a rather
full meal, and when he is warmly
dressed. It docs not occur to him to
notico that a couple of glasses of water
odd more than a pound to tho weight,
and a full meal threo or four pounds;
while a suit such as a man wears on a
cold day will often weigh four or five
pounds more (without counting over
coat) than tho clothing- suitablo for a
warm day.—Richard A. Proctor.
