He Didn’t Like Liberia.
The visits of the steamer Tar Heel
to eur city has brought out a bit of
her captain's history. He is a col
ered man, and is named John Swain
McBarrows, and is a well to do in
dustrious map.- with, an intelligent
•Hatty. His good w'ilb it stewardess
Uf the boat and his sonde engineer,
etfc., but it is not of these we wlsffto
write, but of his trip to Liboria.
Several years ttgo John gathered
his people and his hard earnings to
gether, and*!>ut ont to New York and
therewith about 150 more colored
people, sot out for Liberia, Africa,
then pictured as tho colored man’s
havop of rest, by tho sea captains
who wanted passengers to that shore.
After a sail of about forty-two days
the party reached Monrovia and af
ter looking around for n short while,
selooted a placo to locate, but Cap
tain John said ho had already made
up his mind that although Africa
was his “father land” so to speak, ho
for one preferred tho old hills around
lluwkiuqvlilo to Anything ho saw
there, and whilst foiling timber for a
home ostensibly, his head was
back in Georgia, and tho mail was
bringing hack a letter to his white
friends to send him tFe money to re
turn. The money came and at the
expiration of four months and ten
days he wob again sailing on the
mighty ocean, not for Africa but dear
old Georgia. He says the costumes
of that oonntry didn’t suit him. The
climate was too hot and the natives
wore too little clothing for a man
who had any respect for decency, Jb
SayA he didn’t want to aiayin any l 8
country whore plank woae mado with
a whip saw, the process was to Blow.
Be it said to the captain’s credit
that as soon as he got homo he rais
ed the money and brought back those
of his comrades who were not dead.
, Weighing the Mails.
The government will commence
weighing tho mail carried by the
railroads in tho South on Febru
ary *20th, in order- to determine
tho compensation to bo allowed
them for tho next four years. Tho
mail will bo weighed on tho cars ev
ery day for thirty consecutive days
from the date of commencement to
arrive at a fair average, and will be
conducted by tho postal clerks, tho
railroads having tho privilege of rep
resentation to see'that the weighing
is done correctly. The United States
is divided into four districts, num
bered from one to four. For thirty
days in each year the mail is weigh
ed in one of the districts, so that
each district receives attention every
four years, and has a re-appointment
made of compensation allowed.
On the 20th inst., the weighing of
the mail on the, lttW.R R. will
begin, and then we .shall know how
it compares with former service.
Beach Elected.
The election for Clerk of the Supe
rior Court yesterday was warmly
fought, and every voter that could be
gotten was brought out. There had
been Qrar candidates in the field, but
Mr. W. H. Rainey withdrew a few
days ago, and about noon yesterday
Mr. E. M. Dart realized that his
chances were pour, so withdrew Jn fa
vor of Mr. R. W. Thiot, and from
then nntil night things were - lively
indeed. At six o’clock the polls
dosed, and the connting began, and
by eight o’clock it was known that*
Mr. J. L. Beach had won the day by
nearly 100 votes.

The Board of Directors sustained
the loss by death January 2, 1888,
of one of their members, Mr. H. C.

deplore, and a suitable expression of
their sorrow has been passed and

In conclusion allow me to express
the hope that more public interest

our Library,.and that our member

SECRETARY AND TREASURER’S REPORT
To the Brunswick Library Associa
tion.
Your Secretary and Treasurer bogs
respectfully to report to you that
during the past fiscal year there has
been received from all sources the
sum of $337.05, making! with balance
received from former Treasurer on
March 2,1887, of $28.04, a total of
$365.09, and there has been expend
ed in ail $361.54, leaving a balance
on hand in treasury of $3.65. .The
Association is out of debt, but, there
is, as you perceive, almost no money
in the treasury. Our membership is
only seventy-six, and there may be
noted a lamentable absence of pub
lic interest in our Association, which
has gone backward instead of for
ward during the past year, as may
be «een by comparing the receipts
for 1866, with those of this report
We have expended during the yefir
$103.16 for new books, which, in their
selection reflect credit on the Libra
ry Committee, and have added some
needed furniture and forntshings to
onrRoom, which is now in good
shape, and looks quite well.
We have received during tbe past
year donations of bound volumes
from Dr. C. L. Schlatter, Mrs. D. T.
Dunn and others, and the Advertis
er-Appeal, Breeze and Brunswick
Journal dailies have been tarnished
by the publishers,' for which they
should receive, the thanks of this
Association.
I beg to submit my account cur
rent with vouchers for the Inspection
m*
of your auditing adEhdttoe, which I
trait will approve them.
Respectfully sub:
