Thirty-One Years.
Wo^had a pleasant call this morn
log from Dr. P. W. Douglass* of At
lanta, representing the Fidelity Mn>
tool Life Association, and who war de-
sirous of collecting data in reference
to the healthfulnesss of Btunswiok,
With a view to tho establishment o: 1
i |tn agency here of his company. We
told him to write Brnnswiok down as
the healthiest spot on earth, and that
he would be within the, bonds of
truth, which assertion he pronounced
himself most ready to accept, if he
might judge from the sweet, soft and
balmy air. . * * .
This is the Doctor’s second visit
to Brunswick, the first having been
in 1857, Just thirty-one y^is ago, at
which time he came to prospect for
a drag store. He remained here a
week or more, and during^hat time
he says the only .sighs of a business
with the outside world that he coaid
detect was afew wajjon loads of light
wood knots hauled into town, and the
arrival of (he old steamer St Harys,
which got aground, and was left
high and dr# by the tide, He went
away disgusted, and never came
back until) last night. When he look
ed from his room window this mov
ing the first sight that caught ills
eye was a railroad train and a steam
boat passing at the sometime. When
hi reached the street the surprise was
complete, and be now thinks that a
man would be safe in making any
tovwtaient here. Brunswick surely
grows.

Still Improving.:
Wo take pleasure always in notic
ing the Improvements gofng on
among our citizens and especially
such enterprises as are calculated to
improve the town most, such, for in
stance, as manufactories—any insti
tution that produces something. In
our rounds yesterday we dropped in
upon Messrs. Moore & Valentino, at
the bracket works, and found things
just fairly humming—no idle people
there—but everybody on the move,
keeping up with the orders that con
tinually come in. Since onr last vis
it there to inspect, the building has
been enlarged in two directions—
both on the north and soutifc sides.
These additions were found necessa
ry to make room for more work and
more machinery. Quite a large ex
tension was found necessary on the
north end .of the bnilding, fora new
sash aqd window machine and a new
planer for beveled work. Theso
smen feeling encouraged over
the prospects of onr fair city, are go
ing to keep abreast of the times, and'
propose manufacturing doors and
sash as cheap and good'as can be
had anywhere. We wish them every
auccew add hope their efforts wrill be
Ally rewarded.
6th. We need also another foundry
and machine shop. There would be
plenty of work for two, for much
work goes elsewhere because wo have
no competition.
7th. A drying establishment that
will supply all the seasoned lumber
of all kinds that may be wanted—not
only of pine, but oak, hickory, ash,
etc.
8th. A dyeing establishment would
do well here.
9th. A dairy farm properly run
would pay well. We mean on#’ prop
erly run—a first-class dairy with fine
cows properly kept and fed. There
is big money in such an investment
here.
These are but thirteen in alt. Doz
ens more could be suggested, all of
wlfich would pay well, and at tho
same time help build up the town.
