known to history fa th. United BttMul
America. It la ambiguou*, may meaq
titlwr a ruUlco cr a confederacy, and hat
two momi its the eoustitatJcn. It bint
ao trivial m Now round Land, but it ia
loom «nd does not admit of shortening,
, as does tho name of our noighbor Wand
to Newfoundland. New South Wales fa
almost as .bad, and all three are a*kward
beyond redemption. The test,of this
. narno of a country is fa whether it ad*
mita of a derivative gentile noun out ad*
e tlvs. Bnrope gives ria-’Europmn
tain, BritWu Onmu, Cypriote, anc
Slam, Siamese, Thcso ore good as
names. But no man can bring • himself
to say that ho fan New South Welsh*
man, or that ho is n United 8tabs of
American. .
And so, after tho fashion in which tho
neighbors of. Praise God Barebone’a
brother with the wonderful name, "If
Christ hod not died thou hadst been
damned," said It for short, wo oro in
the habit of calling ourselves simply by
the tail end of our proper .designation,
Americans, forgetful that every human
being from Yukon to Patagonia has
equal rights with us to tho name. The
peoplo of New South Walee want to
change their name, and The Si
well says they ought to do it, althi
for them to claim tho name of Ai
would never do. They might call their
couhtry Sydney, or Sydneylond, or Cook
Sylvania, or Southland, or Auralla, it
makes little difference what so long as it
is manageable. What not to call them
selves might be learned from the names
of some of our United States of American
states. Some of our states allow no de
rivative. A man from Virginia is a Vir
ginian, from South Carolina a South
Carolinian, but how does a man from
Massachusetts pronounce his name? Only
Yankee, whioh is no less absurd than for
Enroughty to spell Darby. Wimt is
man from Connecticut? Still a Yankoe.
What is a man from New Hampshire?
Still a Yankee, although Senator Cas3
-tried to better tho term when ho called
John P. Halo a New Hampshire gooso,
and Halo retorted by calling Cass a Mich
igander. Men from Moinocan still !>e
only Yankees or Down Easters, for limy
resent, we believe, being called Maini..cs.
The later names adopted by our states
are generally musical and usable, al
though Ohioan is a disagreeable derive
tive of Ohio. , The'gentilo word ought to
be Ohiote, like Cypriote, but, perhaps,
the peoplo of that great state do not care
to rhyxno with, coyoto. Wisconsin re
fuses as strenuously as Michigan to ac
cept a derivative, ns tho only v>ne possi
ble would be Wisconsinnor. Of tho pres
ent territories Idaho has a very sweet
name, but what could its citizens call
themselves? We suppose tho peoplo of
Utah might be Utes, but if tho ieiritory
were to take tho proposed state name it
would bo hard to call them Deseretters.
What we chiefly seek in a name is that it
be easy to pronounce and be flexible. Its
meaning is of little consequence. China
is, a good namo, but it means nothing,
.and the people of China have no knowl
edge of it.—New York Independent.

Vico and Virtue In the City.
It is eald that New York is the wlck-
edst city in tho country. It is tho largest
and vice thrives in crowded communities.
Yet if it is tho wickedest city it is also
the best on tho continent. If it contains
thousands of tho worst men and' women
in our land, it contains also thousands of
tlio brightest and best of Christians. In
■point of morality it will compare favor
ably with or.y city irf the world. It is
unhappily true that tho devil's work is
done there upon a largo scale; but so is
the work of God upon an oven greater
Beale. If tho city contains the gaudiest,
tho most alluring anil tho vilest haunts
‘of sin, it also boasts tho noblest and
grandest institutions of religion, of
chari.ty and virtue. Being the great
center of wealth and culture, Now
York is also the center of every thing that

I Foreign School. In Turley.
•I The Turkish government appears to bo
I reviving its school laws with tho nlm of
\) suppressing American and other foreign
| Bcnools. The new law provides that no
f foreigner can open a school without a
special firman given by tho sultan him
self; -and such documents ha is slow to
give. The law forbids any Ottoman
sufiject from attending Buck a school un
til ho shall have taken n course of relig
ious instructions. Tho schools now ex
isting aro to bo suppressed unless they
conform to tlicso regulations within six
months. As a largo amount of capital is
invested in educational institutions in
Turkey, the American minister has pro
tested against this law, and urges other
embassies to join him.—Frank Leslie's.
Nunes for Nanr States,
There is a good deal in names, in spito
of what somebody has said. Tho houso
committee on territories know it, and
they wisely insist that if tho northern
half of Dakota comes into the Union 46
shall bo not as "North Dakota,’* but as
"Pembina”; and that if "Washington”
organizes It must drop its already much
appropriated namo and take "Tacoma,”
“Yakima,” or ‘'WnIlula,” well known
aboriginal designations. There is no
reason why now Btates should bear names
worn threadbare, or why one should bo
called "North” or "West” something or
other. It argues u poverty of' language.
All new states ought to bo compelled to
bear melodious Indian names, as most of
the old ones do.—F rank Leslie’s.
