”1 looked over my shoulder and —id
•See hem. old man, don't yon try that;
you stay right hero,' Yon may thinh this
was <xni«ldfraMw Cum to make,
sheds were not over four rods I
house; but 1 hod become acquainted with
winter windier on the prairies. We_ went
,<m with our game and nothing more was
said. About ten minutes later I looked
up and the ohl man was gone. -Did your
father go out? I asked one of tho girls.
. ‘Yes,’ who replied, ‘and l don’t sen what
keepe him. I wish you would go out and
find him.’
”1 wrapped up and started out, first
taking the precaution to take one end of
a rojie, which I trailed after mo. About
half way between tho, sheds and tho
house I found the old man on his hands
and knees in tho snow, which was seven
feet deep, crawling about, trying to And
° tho house. He was then nearly dead,
and ten minutes more would have fin
ished him. I picked him up, and car
ried him to the house, where with snow,
ice water, and whisky, supplemented
with an'hour or two of hard work, wo
managed to save his life.”
“How do peoplo manage to live in
such a climate?”
“Live?, Why, they prepare for it.
0 The early comers gee orally put up sod
houses, and there is nothing in tho world
so warm as a sod house. You cun walk
around barefoot on tlio fluor of one, if
.properly constructed, in tho coldest
weather.' AftcAhey have been there long
enough settlers generally . build log
houses, hauling logs tlfirty or forty miles
for the purpose. These houses ore warm
and comfortable. So long us you don’t
‘.have to go out you don’t know what
winter is. But the sod house is not to
be treated with disdain, I assure you.”
“How are thoy built?” .
“la tlw first place a frame of boards,
- the size the house Is to be, is put up so ns
• to give tho house n nice appearanco in
side; tho roof, also is boarded over. Then
tho sod is cut with a plow, and a bank
three or four feet, thick Is raised all
around this frazzle. Every sod is laid as
carefully as a mason lays a brick, the
roots up, and all openings aro filled in
with lino dirt. Openings are made for
Itho windows and. doors, which havo
jjtamcs extending from fitside to outside.
These will contain sometimes three win
dows for, winter—always two. When
the sod jjitapart Ik raised to tha height of
the roof, poles are laid on and then sod
put over those. Tho’ roots hold every
thing firm. You would bo surprised to
boo the roots. Some of thoeo grass roots
aro as thick os my finger, and extend
down from from ten to fourteen feet.”
“Whutr
„ “It’s u fact, I assure you. I have fol-
‘lowed them down myself when d
wells in that blue joint grass land. .Why,
u man in plowing has to stop and sharpen
his plow every eighty mis if he cares
anything for his‘ tearn. Tho blacksmith
t. raws out tlie point, but that and tho
tsi^o both havo to be filed down os sharp
as possible, and then, as I say, sharpened
every eighty rods. But to return to tho
sod house. After the outsido is com
pleted the Inside is finished up tosuit tho
taste and pocket of the proprietor. Somo
havo only tho earthen floor, and others
have a board floor, and are divided up
into two or tlune rooms. And, I tell
you, for winter comfort in Dakota a sod
house beats them all. Besides these,
there nro dugouts on tho sido of a hill,
and occasionally you will meet ono on tho
E rairie. Tlio class of settlors that como
l there as a rule have to put up with al
most everything tho flret year or two.”—

The Contribution Uoxes.
There need bo no foar but that those
who want to “pay for thoir religion,”
ns some like to put it, will bo given op
portunity to do so. Tho man who wants
tolielp pay for tho preaching of tho gos
pel doesn't need to have a pesky contri
bution box Blid gracefully along under
his nose every time he attends service.
Kor is there any reason why the amount
of money—usually so small—which is
taken every Sabbath, in the morning
and evening collections, may not be con
tributed in somo other and less awk
wardly conspicuous manner. There aro
many ways in which people can be led
to understand that if they wish to con
tribute they can do so in a quiet and un
ostentatious way, and there is no doubt
whatever but that those who want to
give will find a way.—American Maw,

Electric Light Boors.
Tlio lightbouso board is about to under
take experiments which will have an im
portant bearing on the lighting of dan-
gerous points in our rivers and harbors.
It is nothing less than the lighting of
buoys by electricity. The method at
'present in use for illuminating buoys con
sists in supplying thorn with oil or gas.
With both of these it is noN-mary to re- sul ,
planish tho source of illumination peri- V
odicolly, and this means additional
troublo and expense. Bosidos, in most PDTPTTQ •
cases, tho buoy Is allowed to remain con- ! i IliviLO •
