THE COMMITTEE BACK.
Good News front Washington.
Messrs. Dunn, Madden, Littlefield
and Atkinson, tho committee sent by
Council to Washington at tho re
quest of Mr. T. M. Norwood, our Rep
resentative, are back and 1n good
spirits over tho prospects from their
labors.
Dr. Maddeq Informs us that thoy
found none who were unwilling to
lend a helping band. The various
committees heard our delegation
through patiently and attentively,
and asked dozens of questions, indie
ative of more than passing interest.
The Doctor feels sure wo will get tho
appropriation asked for a public
building, and a generous slice of thpt
asked for tho harbor. Besides these
thoy made such a showing ns will en
title us to a second-class postal sor-
vice, instead of third, as now. They
also secured six hundred dollars for
the mail route to Fernandtnn, with a
prospoot of having the Dungenncss
post office added thereto, which is
$300 more.
Unlikomany others our delegation
only asked for arlne.' needs, which bo
impressed tho commitices that they
felt like granting all in their power.
Savannah asked for $6,000,000, Pitts
burgh, Pa., aa Dr. M. expressed it,
wanted to have a wholo island dug
up and another one planted near by,
whilst modest Brunswick only asked
for $100,000 for a publio building,
$75,000 for our harbor, and $38,000
for Jekyl creek.
wiw were moat cordially
received by Mr. Norwood, who has
certainly won their esteem.

Over a thousand raft hands havo

Tho price for square timber has
dropped a little but scab is always
in demand and br'ngs a fine price in
our maiket.
During tho Jasper Festival the
steamer Hessio will carry passengers

Last week wo inquired of the Jos-
up Sentinel when tho passongor de
pot at Josup would be built. The
last issue of the Sontinel says: “Our
patience has ceased to be a virtue,
and tho Gazette should ask us some
thing easy. We have tried to find
out, but tho secret seems to be locked
up. If the traveling public would
curse the railroads wo would lcayo it
to them, but they heap their abuse
upon Jesup, and we now declare war
and you can count us in tho fight
from this date. We join issues with
the Gazette and Advertiser-Appeal,
and we will be ably backed by the
Macon Telegraph.
