Council took steps last evening
looking to shutting up the cows.
This will work a hardship on some,
but the time has arrived when it be
comes a necessity. First we shut
up the pigs, then the horses and now
the cows. 1
Just Received—A cargo of fresh,
unslacked lime, and for sale by
Ed. Braggins.
There is in this city a young busi
ness man who tells’ us that he has
never fired a gun, pistol or any other
fire-arm in his life. Wc-know of an
other, a married man, who has never
ridden horse-back more than two
miles in his whole life, or driven a ve
hicle more than ten miles. When he
was courting, his girl, who was rais
ed in the country, had to do the driv
ing, for fear ho would break her neck
and smash up the buggy. No two
young men in town stick closer to
business than the fcvo mentioned
above.
Twenty-flvo barrels of apples just

The Post Office.
There is a misconception on the
past of many as to what is necessa
ry to change our post-office from the
third class list where it now is to the
second class, where we are seeking
to p’ace it. It does not depend on
petitions or delegations, but upon ac
tual business—dollars and cents. If
by the 30th of June, the Brunswick
post office have remitted to the gen
eral government over $8,000 for the
year ending that date, then ours will
bo a second class office,•otherwise it
will remain as now, third class. Ev
ery man who orders stamped envel
opes helps on the good works just
that much. Postmaster Hunter in
forms us that if he can continue the
present average he will have carried
the point, but thinks our pconlc
had better lend a helpiug hand to
make the matter a sure thing.
(Boarders Wanted.—A pleasant

Savannah’s Festival.
, Our sister city, Savannah, is en

Gen. Gordon and staff, were her
guests, together with thousands of
the sons and daughters of the South,
all met together to do honor to the
memory of the illustrious Sergeant
Jasper of Revolutionary fame. Bar

land spent a pleasant hour-and-a-
half in the city. Mrs. Cleveland
seemed to capture the people more
than did the President as she smiled
and bowed in ever}- direction. Many
have come away each declaring that
‘ Frankie” bpwed to him or her spe
cially. One fellow informs us that
the lady looked right at him, smiled,
and bowed, and he returned it.
The Festival will hold three days
and will prove a red letter pe.iod in
the history of our sister city.

Albany News: “You never saw a
Saturday in your life when the sun
didn’t shine,” remarked Col. J. W.
Walters to a knot of wags that had
gathered on Broad street yesterday
evening.
“No, sir, you never did. I don’t
know why it is, and will not attempt
to account for it; but it’s so. You
watch it for yourself, and you’ll find
that no matter how cloudy it has
been all the balance of the week, the
sun will shine enough to cast a shad
ow at sometime on Saturday. *
Now, you can make a noto of this,
and watch it.

Virginia’s Knights of Pythias.
Danville, Va., Feb. 21.—The
Grand Lodge of the Knights of Pyth
ias in Virginia met here to night for
its twenty-second annual session.
Delegates arc present from all the
lodges. A grand reception was given
to them to-day at the Academy of
Music by the people and municipal
officers of the city. The report of the
grand officers show that the order is
in a healthy condition numerically
and financially. Fourteen thousand
dollars have boon spent during the
year for relief and there are $24,000
in tho treasuries of the lodges.

No More Circuses.
It is reported that the big circuses
are to abandon traveling. The Inter
state Commission has interposed its
power to prevent the railroads from
making the accustomed concessions
tj these organizations,as it was a dis
semination against other patrons.
This will prove an undisguised bless
ing to the country. The people will
save a large sum that annually pass

catch-penny side shows that it sup

principal sufferers, and they could ill

One of the shrewdest and most
successful advertisers is John Wan-
amaker, the great Philadelphia mei-
chant, who accounts for his success
in this way. “I never in my life used
such a thing as a poster, a dodger or
a hand bill. My plan for fifteen years
has been to buy so much space in a
newspaper and fill it up with what I
wanted. I would not give an adver
tisnment in a newspaper of even 400
circulation for 5,000 dodgers. If I
wanted to sell cheap jewelry or run a
lottery scheme I might use posters,
but I never insult a decent reading
public with hand bills.”
