Tltouank of fea “unemployed" con
no vogM bocaueo they do not want to
work. They do odd job*, they loaf, they
tramp, they pilfer, they steal, and to on
through tho whom gamut of laziness and
vice. Why is tills! Wo have already
said. Human-nature is far from perfect
yet. Many rogues nro bom; many
others are easily turned into rogues by
circumstances. It is likely enough that
tho insdnet of ceil 11 ring Is transmitted;
it is certain that the contamination of
vicious surroundings has Its natural ef
fect Necessity holds the bom felon in
a pitiless grip. Birth give* the infant
tho fatal bent; home life develops it.
Tho unwieldy bulk of modem society is
traversed by hard lines of moral os well
as of social cleavage.'
Crime runs into pockets like ore in
the mine. - The Ishmaelites dwell alone
and propagate among themselves. There
is nothing to attenuate the vicious strain.
We have on the fringe of the decent
population a class of creatures who, at
best, aro worthless, and too often are
pure pests. It is recruited, but it is not
regenerated, from tho outside; on tho
other hand, it feeds tho ranks of the
thriftless, the reckless, tho ne’er-do-
wells. What must bo tho result of such
a state of things! With a rapidly in
creasing population, with a greater mass
of poverty, a greater number of viciously
disposed people crowding into “East
ends" in all our great cities, what can wo
expect from a continuance of the present
system of dealing with the criminal
classes? Reason answers that wo are to
expect nothing but evil.—St. James'
Gazette.
Danger* of Trapping tho Grimly.
I saw some remarks upon this subject
tho other day from mi old trapper and
hunter which evince a most thorough
knowledge of the matter, and which co
incide in every particular with my own
personal experience.
Ho says: “I have hunted and trapped
the grizzly bear scores of times, and if
any one thinks there isn’t peril as well as
excitement in the sport, let. him go out
into the grizzly’s country and try it. I
know that the grizzly hear, next to tho
Indian, was the tig.p.n customer thirty
years ago that t!. ' hunter hud to deal
with. In those days wo used to think
there was more danger in trapping tho
grizzly boar than there was in chasing
him with the rifle.
“There have been times when trappers
have come up with tho bear at tho very
moment ho has succeeded in tearing loose
front the trap. I know one man, James
Carver by name, who happened to reach
his grizzly at such a time. The bear
made ono rush, and before tho compan
ion who was with Carver realized tho
situation the bear had torn Carver to
pieces.
“I heard some ono say once that when
you have trapped a 1,000 pound grizzly
you haven’t caught a bear nt nil, but
simply the deVil incarnate, and I tell you
thaVa pretty near tho truth."—Gen.
Maroy in Outing.
Working a Swla* Wine Press.
In tho cafes and other ptiblio places
there were placards advertising American
wine presses, but I saw nono of them in
use. At a farm house near us wo looked
on at tho use of ono of the old fashioned
Swiss presses. Under it lay a mighty
cake of grapes, stems and skins, crushed
into a common mass, and bulging further
beyond the press with each turn of tho
screw, while tho juice ran in a little rivu
let into a tub below. When tho press
was lifted tho grapes were seen only half
crushed. Two peasants then mounted
the cake and trimmed it into shape with
long handled spades, piling the trimmings
on top, and then bringing tho press down
again. They invited us with charming
politeness to taste the juice, but their
heavy boots boro evidence of too recent a
visit to tho cherished manure heap, and
wq thanked them with equal courtesy.
This grapo cake, when it had yielded
up its laSt drop, would bo broken to
pieces and scattered over the fields as a
fertilizer. Tho juice would meanwhile
have been placed ,to ferment in tho tuns,
twelve and thirteen feet deep, which lay
in tho adjoining ce|lar.—W. D. Howells

Turks and Arabs occasionally come
trough Castle Garden with designs on
Lmerica as a dwelling place, and they
generally stay and succeed right well.
They pick up tho language in no time,

on the streets and in shops and offices.
As peddlers they got on beautifully.
Their handsome faces and Oriental man

those they approach with magical celer

those who resist their blandishments.
