AM AMERICAN WOMAN’S ATCRY
or Wtut Rha H»w In Mexico—ClurAeler-
UtlM at the People.
It teoid of the Mexican*, *• of the
Boleni,Stellarapoaactdeep endne* I*
rtywwed in ttelr eye*. Ttio Mexican*
' are good character reader#, and taped-
ally not* tha Uartog of atrangew, TUay
an very polite and lioipltabte, and rery
proud. The higher olaaaoa of aodety In
Mexico are alihuat aa cxclutira on the
court circle* at Europe. A middle dale
b growing up in Mexico, Mexican aalu*
tatione nro exceedingly cordial “Men
tall into each other’s arms and remain
■ thus for arveral minute*, patting each
other on the shoulder and Indulging in
all sdrta of endearing epithets.” Another
lalutatiou, creu between friends of; op
posite sex, is thin’ described: “In the
quickest, matt spirited manner, tliarina
of both lurries are outstretched,
they rush together for a second,
their breasts barely touch, and whilo
the observer is watching for a kite to
follow this ardent satate, they separate
tnd the abmn> is finished. The extreme
frankness accompanying it compete coo
to admire the custom: for it means no
more than linnd shuking among the
Americans.” If friends meet twenty
times a day they must pause to shake
hands.
At the cspltsl one day there was seen
two splendid carriages, each occupied by
one man. Tlio carriages halted, both
’ men alighted, “removed hats, shook
hands,' embraced, talked for n few
moments, again embraced, shook hands,
bowed, took oil lints, and each entered
his carriage and went his way. ” 'Tho
formal salutation between women is a
lap of tho right iutnd on tho left shoulder,
and then a generous shako of tho hand.
Women who nro Intimate friends not
only top the shoulder, but lay their
cheeks softly together for an instant.
A lady traveler commends this sort of
feminine salutation, and evidently pre
fers it greatly to tho American form of.
greeting on tho lips. ‘
The Mexican makes really os many
gestures as n Frenchman, and has quito
in extensive social sign language. Their
blowing of kisses from tho fingers is a
graceful demonstration. A certain posi
tion of tho thumb nnd forefinger signi
fies “stop n moment," One arm held
half upright, with tho elbow in tho other
band, means “ho is too Rtingy to pay his
debts:’’ one hand rubbed across tho fore
arm, “ho plays on tho credulity of his
friends;” tho palm held outward, with
thumb and forefinger forming a circle,
“sho fe very rich;” tho fingers of ono
hand closod, except the thumb and little
finger,’ “ho’s a sharper.’’ Educated
Mexican men are great skeptics in relig
ious matters—except when they are very
rick. The people nro temperate. Young
girls aro coiled “pullets;’! marriageable
men, “young or old roosters,” and the
street arnbs who ogle ladles are known
as' “lizard#.” Americans who have mar
ried Mexican women find it necessary to
live in Mexico, for their wives are very
unhappy elsewhere. Mexican children
lire never struck. Corporal punishment
in schools is prohibited by law. Correc
tion takes the form of persuasion and ap
peal. Tile result is tint: in all classes a
grntlo com-.esy and consideration for
Olliers prevail.
Hoodlum children aro unknown In
Mexico. A hoodlum child is ono who
Inis lieen coifed and abused until bo
naturally (that is, according to the ex
amples i et him) begins to kick and pound
ot.ieiu who nro weaker than himself. Tho
step from this to other deeds of violence
is short.
Quo cannot tell half of the graces and
courtesies of tho Mexican children. “In
tho alumeda, with kindly deference, they
will always yield to elderly and infirm
persons tlicvr own cozy and shady seats.
On entering a Bala, where there are fow
ov many guests, these exquisitely polito
little genii, men will go all around, shak
ing bunds with every one present. They
never break into tho conversation, but
when addressed will modestly join it;
then, wishing to retire, will say, ‘with
vour kind permission,’ and, ngain shak
ing hands, move gracefully from tho
company. Girls are no less imbued with
tire same spirit of courtesy. A Mexican
boy never thinks himself too near man
hood to pay the compliment to his mother
of kissing her hand every time ho comes
into her presence."
Tho Mexican flowers aro very deeply
colored. “If red, it is tho most glowing
nnd intense; if yellow or purple, tho
richest; if white or pink, tho purest and
most) delicate.” Fresh flowers are abund
ant and cheap throughout the year, in
cluding roses, pansies, sweet peas, helio-
“Calla lilies, the size of of an, bloom^ux-
uriant in every ditch," and tho gera
niums are as tall as a man. Tho most
remarkable flower is the “tree of tho
little hands,’’ a nativo of tho colder re-
§ »n. Tlio bright red flowers nro well
etined miniature hands. It is slow of
growth, not reaching full „ sizo in
TOO years. In tho Valley of Mexico
fifty varieties of lilies, no two aliko,
bloom on mountain, crag and jAdii.
- Tilts mortality of the City i f M-xico is
fearful and Imlf of it is due i > u.rg nnd
diarrheal discuses. The Mc.\.can capital
can hnnlly Iv said to have in mmvhi of
drainage m.diewornge. Cntur’i U com
mon among tho Mexicans, tmd when
they Iiavo colds they do.not nllmv water
to touch their faces. They have very
fow nervous disease*. Tho i-d.iicv of
their lives is too measured for limt.—
