exteriorly, built of atone, with a steeple
whoso fine proportions have been much
admired by student* of architecture. All
around, in the great churchyard, lie the
dead of past generations—a few of the
inscriptions dating bock nearly three hun
dred years. Some of the graves, I was.
told, contain the remains of a dozen per
sons—one coffin being placed upon the
top of another, room being made for the
mw comers as the earlier tenants of the
graves moulder into dust. Here, after
patient search, I found the graves of An
cestors long since passed away,—William
T. Tinsley in Lyons Republican.
One's Own XJfb Experience*.
What would bo tho effect upon litera
ture if every person of spirit and the
ability to write fairly well wero to em
body in a single romanoe the most vivid
and commanding experiences of his own
life, from, the ‘time when he began to
think to his maturity, and tell faithfully
tho most sacred emotions of his own
heart, while faithfully photographing
the people and the life around him? We
should have a flood of intimate autobio
graphies, but slightly guarded by the
veil of fiction; heart breaking confes
sions. interspersed with brood views of
tho beauty that there fa hr life, and
dashed with humor; and whose reality
. would commend our attention and our
sympathies in spite of ourselves.—Boston

A Watch's Gain or Loss.
A ship's chronometer fa so adjusted as
to remain always in oho position, no
matter what the motion of the ship may
be, tad on that account It keeps better
time than a watch that la placed in the
pocket during tho ’

loses only a second a day fa considered an
excellent timepiece, but in order to be eo
considered it must mako the giiln steadily

■Dr. Urias da Silvelrs has sent to tho
Medioo-Chirurgical society of Bio de Ja
neiro a quantity of a vegetable substance
which is very common In the provinoes—
Minas gcraee and Barra mans*—and
which, ho says, he has used with great
advantage in the bites of cobras, espe
cially during the period In which the
most serious symptoms—hemorrhages
'and ataxo-adynamic phenomena—ap
peared. He points out analogiee between
the effects of snako bite and of yellow
fever, both of a symptomatic and patho
logical nature, and suggests that the
drag ho sent should bo tried in cases of
yellow fever,*—Scientific American.
