Hali—lami Going to Pieces
Malmalaon, tbe famotia chateau of the
til fitted Josephine do Beauliarnais, is
6Unply going by piecemeal to the dogs,
or rather to tbe rats, and it bos been ad
mirably suggested that the place should
be converted into a museum containing
historical relics of tbe first empire. In
tbe beginning of tbe present summer
Malmaison was offered for solo at an
upset prico of £10,000, but no bidder
could be found. The park is now let out
in small lots to builders, and hideous
villas are’rising around tho cliateau. The
two facades of tho mansion—tliut of tho
courtyard and of the garden—are intact,
but the interior is like-a barn. Tho salon
of Josephine still exists, with its mural
decorations of birds and gilt flowers, and
eo do the dining hall, the council cham
ber—shaped like a tent—and the library;
but the furniture is all gone, and the
“pleasure house’’ of old is a melancholy
wreck.—Paris Cor. London Telegraph.
Ten Bonn of Sleep.
James Payn, the novelist and corre
spondent, has come to the conclusion that
the only salvation of our writers and
literary classes in general lies in going to
bed early, getting ten hours of sleep, and
understanding that brain work needs
more complete and certain recuperation
than ordinary physical labor. Tho office
and necessity of sleep is getting to be bet
ter appreciated. Little Is heard nowa
days about burning midnight oil. Obedi
ence to physiological laws, alone, will
enable a man to escapo mental break
down at an early age. Genius cannot
override nature. It is impossible to turn
night into day, or to habitually do two
days’ work in one. Common sense and
method are better than brilliance, and
judgment is in the end ahead of genius.
There is a young fetrl down in ousstsg

Some one gave herO cents one day. She

of potatoes, planted them, paid for their
cultivation, harvesting and marketing,
and camo out with a clear profit of $40.
Let tho y.oungmen of tho south look out
for this girl. That $40 is still growing.
It may run into tho millions some of
theso days.—Columbus Dispatch.
Bombostlo Stylo of Boyalty.
Tho terms in which theso ancient
rulers uddressed each other resemble in
their bombasfio stylo those employed in

Peculiar Perm of Ilystorlo.
Dr. Richardson mentions a case of a
young woman attending a consumptive
patient and was so impressed with the
paroxysms of coughing that site began to
imitate them. The imitation was per
fect and continued two years, her friends
believing she had consumption, though
not a sign of it existed in her lungs. At
£ last sho suddenly recovered. It was only
hysteria of a peculiar form. Now many
similar cases ore cured, and from this the
doctor thinks ho lias found the secret of
arresting this malady.—51. L. Holbrook,

Woman as a "Hoodoo.
There is a mine near Leadvillo into
which women ore never admitted. If a
woman were permitted to enter this mine
I bclievo every last man on tho premises
would quit work. Tho mino has had an

••Tho Spider uiul t ho Fly."’
Every one has by heart ilioso charm
ing little verses of “Tho Spider and the
Fly.’’ They have always been accredited
to Mary Ho.witt, and naturally, for they
are always published over her name.
Mrs. Howitt was a charming writer of
prose as well as verso, but in this instanco
is guilty of the sin of plagiarism. The

Handling Immense quantities of Prestley’s celebrated blaek goods we are enabled to make lower
prices and to guarantee every yard of cashmere, Henrietta and other varnished board brands of
black goods we sell. This is our pet department.
Knowing tbe necessity of securing black goods that will not turn brown or creak in wearing, we
have spent some time In selecting those most worn and host adapted to the market. We point with
E ride to the result of our labor, buying goods direct from tbe best houses who sell nothing else but
lack goods, there is no risk of getting goods redyed from unsalable colors as is often the ease with
many houses. .
Besides this brand ot goads are unquestionably the best niannfaetuoed, and as we buy large quan-
