Th# Rielmioml Enquirer anys that at the

A correspondent of the Cincinnati Ga
zette, writing from Hunterdon county, N. J„
tells the followingstmy ; “There is a goose
in my neighborhood that lias seen the frosts
of S3 winters, owned by one Mr. Scliomp.
This goose, famous for its great age, has been
kept in the Schomp family ever since tho
Revolutionary war. When the news came
to the people of Reddington township.
Hunterdon county, that the war was ended
and that they were free people, they collect- j
ed to l)Ave a general drinking jollification, j
There being some r cause for a general rush :
into the yard, where there were four geese,
three of these were killed, and the one that
escaped is that I now speak of. Two years

The young family are living and doing well.
I was informed by Mr. Schomp, who lias
owned the gOose for the last fifty years, of
these facts,
VICE PRESIDENT BRECKINRIDGE.
A Kentucky correspondent of tho Herald
makes the following remarks upon Vice I’res
ident Breckinridge, who is now at his home
in Kentucky:
The Vice President since his return home
has lieen attending to the arduous duties of
his profession, save the small portion of time
spent in stump speaking. H-e and his part
ner, James 0. Breck, a Scotchman by birth,
get one of the largest and most lucrative
practices in the State. Brock is comparative
ly young, a self-made mau, and for legal acu
men and learning has but few superiors in the
State. The Vice President is now as much
a leader of the Democracy ns ever Mr. Clay
was of the Whig party. Tiiey know that
his oratorical powers are not excelled by
those of any mail in the Union; that he is
not a politician in the common acceptance of
the term; that he is neither selfish nor a
trickster; in fact, that lie is a. statesman,
worthy to have been a r peer of Clay, Cal
houn, and Webster. They will follow his
lead, because they know lie will lead them
right.
A BOLD BBT BEAUTIFUL FIGURE- *
During; tlic delivery of a sermon, last Sun
iljv > St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in this
city, thf* eyes of tlio congregation were sud
denly riveted upon the speaker, Rev. Francis
X. Hoyle, by what, for the moment, seemed |
to be a digression to the all absorbing topic
of conversation and conjecture throughout
the civilized world—the Atlantic telegraph. :
The eloquent divine spoke in terms of glow
ing panegyric of this wonderful triumph of,
human science, and dilated upon the revolu
tions which the grand achievement will ac
complish in the commercial, political and so
cial condition of the two hemispheres thus
successfully tuiiied by means of the electric
wire. What is it after all, exclaimed the
speaker, when compared with the instantano
ons communication between the Throne of
Divine Grace and the heart of man? Offer
up your silent petitions for grace. It is trans
mitted through realms of unmeasured space
more rapidly than the lightning’s flash, and
the answer reaches the soul ere the prayer
has died away on the sinner’s lips. Yet this
telegraph, pet;forming its saving functions ev
er since Christ died for us on Calvary, fills
not the world with exultation and shouts of
gladnq§8 v —with ijhimtnationsand bonfires and
the booming of cannon. The reason is, otic
is the telegraph of this world, and may pro
duce wonderful revolutions on earth ; the
other is the sweet communion between Christ
and the Christian's soul, and will secure a
glorious immortality in heaven. — Washing

Poisonous and Uuly Reptiles.— A few
days since as a box of fruit from Palermo was
being opened in the fruit store of Messrs.
Reed & Furhush, 21 Merchants row, a live
centipede qf the most venomous class was
disclosed to view, and, after a somewhat pro
tracted chase about the store, and among
barrels and boxes, it was captured, immedi
ately consigned to a bottle filled with alcohol,
where it soon expired after manifesting its
utter distaste for its treatmentd* a varie
ty of contortions. This deadly poisonous
reptile measured some six inches in length
and has forty-two distinct legs, each about
three-fourths of an inch long. A, living
scorpion was discovered in the same box ot
fruit, and was consigned to the same liquid
element as its poisonous companion.—Bos

During the thunder storm on Saturday
evening, the lightning struck the fence of
Mr. I. H. Beery’, ih this place, killing several
geese-that were in the immediate vicinity.—
A great many persons in different parts of
the town received severe shocks, and a boy,
a son of Sullinger, was thrown to the
ground by the suddenness and power of the
shock. Ahbongh our residence is two or
three squares from the point at which the
eleottfc current came in contact with the
earth, every member of onr family seemed
to be paraliaed for the moment.
A futMiy neighbor of onrs says the old
idea so frequently advanced that feathers are

fectually exploded on Saturday when so

BUSINESS IMPROVING IN NEW YORK.
The New York correspondent of the Phila
delphia Inquirer writesT
As the season advances business increases,
especially in dry goods circles, and we may
add that the market is gradually strengthen
ing, so far as standard goods aie concerned.
The season is, of course, later than usual,
but tiiere is a coufidont feeling among all
classes that the season’s business will prove
I largely in excess of the corresponding period
iof last year, or even of 1856. The favora
ble result of the harvest, the easy condition
| of the finances, and the gradual strengthen
ing of confidence, combine to make a most
favorable impression on the public ufind, with
regard to tbc future course of trade. Eve
rybody seems to be sailing closer to the wind
than usual, very few credits beyond six
: months being granted to buyers from nny

HUDSON’S BAY COMPANY.
Tho New York Herald says: “ Avery
important debate took place ill the English
Parliament, on tho 20th lilt, on the subject
1 of the renewal of the Hudson’s Bay Compa
ny’s charter. Mr. Roebuck moved that the
! charter ought not to bo renewed; that the
legal validity of the exclusive rights claimed
jby the Company, under their charter, ought
at once to be determined by process of law ;
i and that 6o much of the territory hitherto
| held by the Company as may be needed for i
the purpose, of •colonization ought, without
delay, to be resumed by the government. He
asseited that he had in view the building up,
in British North America, of great English
lines of settlement from the Atlantic to the
I Pacific Weans, which would act as a colonial
| counterpoise to the immense and 4 overshad
owing’ national territorial power of the Uni-
Wed States. The Cabinet ijinisters assumed,
in some nleasure, the same tone. Sir Btilwer
; Lytton stated that it was the desire of the
I government to make powerful military and
naval stations at Vancouver’s Island, and to
| own and control a commercial 4 viaduct’ from
the Atlantic to the Pacific, into which the
iipmense trade of China and other Eastern
countries would fall,”
NIGHT BLOOMING CEREUS.
To Mrs. Henry Peters of this... place we
arc indebted '(as of one 4 of Nature’s
greatest floral curiosities. On Monday night j
of this week her Night Blooming Cereus
presented the ricli and rare spectacle of three j
full blown blossoms. This plant must attain !
the age of seven years before it blooms at all, j
after which it blooms annually, and the great j
peculiarity of the flower is its short lived
beauty. It commences opening in the even
ing,‘and before morning, hangs drooping and
withered on the stalk. The blossom is very
large, somewhat the shape of a lilly, with pe
tals ofThe purest white, beautifully shaded
with straw color. Inside of the corola droops
a bunch of yellow stamens, having the ap
pearance of a heavy skein of floss silk. Mrs.
Peters certainly deserves great credit for the
many years of care she has bestowed upon
the plant, and we think she is reaping a rich
reward. —Sandusky Pioneer.
The Fifth Husband Gone. —A few
weeks since, sayß the New Orleans Crescent,
we mentioned, as a singular circumstance, the
marriage of a German widow in the third
district***) her fifth husband—no one of the
previous four having dntlived his wedding a
year. Well, a few days since this fifth hus
band took the yellow fever. He died, and
on Friday he was bnried. This singular and
most remarkable fatality among the hus
bands of one lady, wouljj create doubtful
talk among that lady's acquaintances, were
she not well known and respected, and the
causes of death of her different husbands
well known to their friends. As it is, it is
one of the most curious instances of fatality
wc ever heard of. ‘

the great comet of Charles V., as it is some
times called, but better known to astrono

its appearance, and will very shortly be visi
ble to the naked cj’e. It has been seen
from the Paris observatory through its tele
