IKE SMITH ON
PARCELS POST
Georgia Senator Asks For Re
!)ort on Postage Second Class
vlail. Wants Different Cars.
Atlanta.—Senator Hoke Smith who.
by the way, is expected in Atlanta for
a brief visit Saturday or Monday with
Vice President Marshall has presented
in the senate a resolution calling for
a report from the joint committee on
postage on second class mail matter
and for transportation of the mails.
This is the joint committee which
was appointed in 1912 and Senator
Smith says it has finished Its inves
tigations. He urges the necessity for
immediate report on the ground that
the parcels post is of such character
that it should be handled in a differ
ent class of cars and at cheaper rates
than ordinary mail matter.
Senator Smith says It Is Impossible
for the postmaster general to increase
the present weight of parcels post
packages to 100 pounds on account of
the present form of railroad transpor
tation and the necessity for enlarged
space in which to handle the parcels
post.
He says that with the report of this
committee it W’ould be practicable lo
adopt a different style of car for the
transportation of parcels post and
make the railroad transportation
cheaper, thus stltaining the present re
duced rates w'hich have been fixed by
the postmaster general and making ii
possible for tho postmaster general to
still further reduce the rates.
Senator Smith has been a most ac
tive supporter of the parcels post, and
it was due largely to his efforts, with
Senator Bourne, that the original bill
was brought before the senate, which
provided for low rates for short dis
tances.
Senator Smith does not think it
feasible to increase the weight of the
package beyond fifty pounds until an
improved system of transportation is
adopted, and the object of his resolu
tion is to bring a report from the
committee which has been Investigat
ing the subject, so that legislative ac
tion may take place which will facili
tate the further development of the
parcels post.

' SPORTLETS
(By J. H. 8.)
It looks as If Manager Brouthere is
going to use the Tigers as the step
ping stone towards that coveted spot
at the top of the percentage column.
That Colunfhus bunch got theirs
and now It’s the tigers' turn. Who’s
next? The Wllderites, of course!
It's true Clark sawed out a couple
of times in yesterday’s game, but he
wag simply saving his “big ones” for
the final rally. Remember, he rap
rep In the winning run.
Manager "Babe’’ Brouthers showed
a great deal of "spunk” yesterday
when he benched Neyenhouse and
went to bat In his place "Babe" has
a bad case of Charlie Horse.
Mackert Is the real "candy kid,”
when he gets on the bases. There
could not be a more lively or fleeter
man. He takes all kinds of chances,
and the best iart of It, gets away
with them.
Burgess should also he mentioned
here. That "gent" Is certainly going
I to make a record with the stick in
I this league. One can always depend
1 upon him for a hit. In fact, he’s the
one best bet in the hitting lino.
Now that the local aggregation hat
placed the Macon Tigers underfoot,
the next thing to consider Is keeping
them there. Cnn this he done? Hope
so, remember that bunch of Foxes?
As the Comhacks have the "hold-tin
rag" down to perfection It wouldn't
be a bad Idea to get a little of that
"Casey Jones’’ energy and make a
flying bound ahead of the topnotch
ers “I’ll bet another thousand I’ll go
higher than you.”
FISHING PARTY IS BACK
FROM DOWN THE RIVER

Jack Overton, W. T. Hanklnson, Archi
bald Blackshear, F. I’. Farrar. George
