Geo. Tatrum, an old, gray-haired ne

After the arrest It developed that the
old negro had been buying whiskey in
Augusta and peddling It through Lin
coln, Columbia and Richmond counties
and dispensing with it for chickens and
egg*. It seemed that a half-pint brought
either one frying-size chicken or one
dozen fresh, country eggs. This prod

he was making a fairly good livelihood,
and the scheme Was nothing new, for

Bankers of Opinion That
Charges Will Be Diminished
By Opening of Federal Re
serve Banks.
Washington—Repeated inquiries are
made at the treasury department by
bankers throughout the country as to
whether the federal reserve will have
the federal reserve banks act as clear
ing houses and what rate for collec
tions will be fixed.
Under the federal reserve act it is
within the power of the board to per
form the functions of a clearing house
for the 12 reserve banks or designate
one of the banks which Is to clear the
business of the other eleven. Fur
thermore the board may require each
federal bank to act as a clearing house
for all of its member banks.
Secretary McAdoo and Comptroller
of the Currency Williams have re
frained from interpreting details of the
federal reserve bank act and have
ventured no prediction as to the pos
sible action the board will take con
cerning the establishment of clearing
houses and the regulation of exchange
and collection rates.
However hankers generally seem to
he of the opinion that there wil be a
decided reduction in collection charges.
The board has the power to fix the
charge member hunks shall collect
from their patrons for clearing cheeks
and also hns power to regulate the
charge each federal reserve bank shall
make upon member banks for clearing
and collection.
SHOVEL OR PICK?
Two sons of toil were taking a walk
through the West Knd the other day
looking at the shops. Among others,
they at last came to a jeweler's and
both gazed enviously at the wealth of
gems displayed in the window. Loose
stones lay scattered about in distract
ing profusion.
As they stood the fascination of the
gems grew on them. At last the sil
ence was broken by Bill, an English
man.
"All right. <»in't It?"
"Ay, breathed Handy.
Then followed another long silence,
| once more broken by Bill;
"'Ow'd you like yer pick among that
lot. Handy?"
Handy looked at him contemptu
! coaly.
“Pick!" he snorted. "Shovel, you
mean!”—Pearson's Weekly.

The Secret of
Hot Springs Waters
The General Ideas Held Regarding
These Springs Have Been
Proven Erroneous.
I The Interior Department of the
l nited States Government has demon
strated, under a report made by Prof.
: Bertram B. Boltwood of Yale College,
that the waters of Hot Springs, Ar
kansas, are heavily charged with radio
active gas, and that their curative
qualities are due to these gases, pres
ent in the water, and not to the pres
ence of salts of radium or other solids
i as had for so long been supposed.
These waters afford almost certain
relief from Rheumatism, Gout, Ma-
I laria, Locomotor Ataxia (earlier
! stages), Bright’s Disease (not too far
'advanced), Liver or Bladder trouble,
.Dyspepsia, Skin or BTood disease,
| Catarrhal trouble, Women’s diseases,
or any ailments of a kindred nature.
Of course, the wonderful curative
'qualities of the waters have made
; Hot Springs. Arkansas, world-famous
! as a health resort.
I It must he understood, however,
it'nat this delightful place offers at
tractions for the pleasure-seeker that
| are second to no resort In America.
Owned and controlled by the U. S.
Government, every consideration is
shown to visitors. The charge for
baths is strictly regulated, the hotel
rates are extremely reasonable, ac
commodations practically uns ur -
p-ssed, and many attractions are of
fered. There are splendid tennis
courts, a golf course of 18 holes that
is one of the finest in the country,
base ball fields, mountain drives,
dancing and social activities constant
ly active.
Situated high in the mountains, the
climate is ideal the year around. Al
most never a warm night and prac
tically free from flies and mosquitoes.

IT IS A HANDICAP.
One of old-time stock
yards magnates, who was a philan
thropist as well as a pork packer,
liad an intense dislike to cigarettes,
and would not allow anybody to
smoke them in his office, says the
Youth's Companion. One day, many
years ago, a half-grown youth found
him alone at his desk and asked for
a job as office hoy. The packer look
ed him over kindly enough, but shook
his head.
‘‘l’m afraid you won't do, my son,”
he said.
The lad, who was rather effeminate
in appearance, had received several
similar answers during the day and
was somewhat discouraged. So now
he said, with some bitterness;
“It's my yellow hair, I suppose?”
“What is your name, my boy?”
“John Harris.”
“Well, Johnny," said the million
aire packer, “it isn't your yellow hair.
It's your yellow fingers!”
